Apple interview guide¶
Builds iPhone, Mac, iOS, iCloud, Siri and Apple silicon; interviews are run by the hiring team, vary widely, and weigh domain depth and 'Why Apple?'. Updated October 2026.
| Apple at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Category | FAANG |
| Intern level | Software Engineering Intern or co-op (summer internships or academic-year co-ops; official students page: 'open to those enrolled full-time and pursuing a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or doctorate'). India: IS&T intern roles are reported (e.g. Reliability Engineering IS&T Intern, Oct 2025, offer the next day); duration and PPO terms are not confirmed in sources. Apple's internship search listed 89 results on Oct 4, 2026; the newest were mostly in Europe and China. |
| New grad level | ICT2 ('Junior Software Engineer' on Levels.fyi). Posting titles seen in 2025 to 2026 reports: 'Software Engineer, IS&T Early Career' (US, Aug 2026) and 'Junior Software Engineer' (India, for freshers, Aug 2025). |
| 0 to 3 years | ICT2 to ICT3 ('Software Engineer'); Levels.fyi ICT3 data points start at about 2 YOE. Level is set by the hiring team after the loop. |
| Online assessment | Varies by team: CoderPad link or HackerRank-style assessment; many US teams skip the OA and start with a recruiter or hiring manager screen : Commonly 2 coding problems in 60 to 70 min (examples: two-bag knapsack, follow a path through a 15 x 10 grid), sometimes plus 15 to 20 MCQs on the team's stack (JavaScript/React, Java) |
| Coding rounds | 1 to 3 technical screens plus 1 to 3 onsite coding rounds (Aced); team-dependent |
| Behavioral | No published interview framework; team-run behavioral and hiring manager rounds built around 'Why Apple?', collaboration, invention and results; Apple's shared values (accessibility, privacy, environment, inclusion) |
| Timeline | Aced: 4 to 8 weeks in most cases, up to 3 to 4 months; long gaps between stages are common. Aced blog: anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months. After a verbal offer, written offers can wait on approvals and headcount checks. Apple hires year-round by team rather than in a single new grad season. |
| New grad pay | Levels.fyi (fetched Oct 4, 2026), US Software Engineer ICT2: average total comp $166,692 from only 14 recent data points; p25 $152,820, median $161,000, p75 $175,000 (page range $145K to $191K+); median base $140,234, median stock $22,500/yr. ICT3: average $255,770 (41 data points). Small ICT2 sample: treat as a rough range. An ICT3 full-stack offer (Mar 2025, Cupertino) was reported as $175K base, $33K/yr stock, $20K sign-on, 7.5% bonus. |

Interview process¶
New grad¶
- Apply to a specific team posting. There is no central Apple loop: you apply to a team's requisition on jobs.apple.com and the recruiter and interviewers belong to that team (Aced, interviewing.io). Shortlisting is team-specific, so tailor your resume to each posting (Mar 2025 ICT3 report). You can interview with several teams at once (interviewing.io).
- Recruiter and/or hiring manager screen. 15 to 30 min recruiter call (background, why Apple, compensation expectations), sometimes followed by a hiring manager conversation that can include technical questions (Aced).
- Online assessment (some teams). Used by some teams, not all. Reported formats: 2 coding problems in 60 to 70 min on CoderPad or a similar platform (IS&T SWE Hyderabad, May 2025: Java-only, 70 min; India Junior SWE for freshers, Aug 2025: Java-only; Junior SWE ICT2, Aug 2025: Java or Python), sometimes plus 15 to 20 MCQs on the role's stack (Jan 2025 OA: 2 coding + 15 MCQ; IC3 Frontend, Jun 2025: 1 hour, 2 coding + 20 JavaScript/React MCQs).
- Technical screen(s). 1 to 2 interviews of 45 to 60 min, usually on CoderPad: DSA plus CS fundamentals or language depth. A US IS&T Early Career candidate (Aug 2026) was told by the recruiter to expect 'a quick intro, CS fundamentals, and around 15 minutes of coding'. A Java backend role for 0 to 3 years (Feb 2026) scheduled a 60-min CoderPad round on Core Java, data structures and problem solving. India IS&T rounds mix DSA with Java, Spring Boot, OOP and microservices theory.
- Onsite loop. Virtual or in person, about 3 to 8 rounds depending on team (Aced blog: 3 to 8 rounds of 45 to 60 min; interviewing.io: 6 to 8; Aced guide: 4 to 7 rounds counting screens): coding, domain (iOS, frontend, backend, systems), sometimes LLD or design, and a hiring manager or behavioral round centered on 'Why Apple?'. India Junior SWE for freshers (Aug 2025): DSA round, Java/Python/microservices/LLD round, techno-managerial round.
- Debrief and offer. Teams decide in live debriefs; the hiring manager has the most influence (interviewing.io). Offers then need approvals, which can take weeks: an ICT3 candidate (Mar 2025) wrote that Apple 'requires 4 levels of signatures up to the VP level to roll out the offer'; a Jun 2025 candidate had a verbal offer with the written offer 'pending business approvals' for over 3 weeks. Some candidates are told after the loop that the position was filled by someone else (IC3 Frontend, Jun 2025).
Intern¶
- Apply. Search 'Students: Internships' on jobs.apple.com; postings are team-specific and appear through the year (Summer 2027 GPU intern postings appeared Aug and Sep 2026 per prior verification).
- Interviews (US). Usually 1 to 2 team interviews of about 45 min (an Apple Vision Pro intern candidate in Mar 2025 was scheduled for one 45-min interview); expect coding plus project discussion, but US intern reports are sparse.
- India IS&T intern (Oct 2025 report). Round 1 technical elimination (about 50 min): project deep dive, CoderPad DSA (rotate matrix, merge k sorted lists, longest mountain, LRU cache design), complexity theory and networking (DNS, TCP vs UDP, caching, L1/L2/L3 cache). Shortlist email within 30 min. Round 2 managerial and HR (about 50 min): 5 to 6 behavioral questions each on Collaboration, Invention and Results. Offer reported the next day.
With 1 to 3 years of experience¶
With 1 to 3 years (ICT3 range), expect a recruiter or HM screen, 1 to 2 technical screens, then 3 to 6 onsite rounds: coding, language internals (Java concurrency, Spring Boot, React hooks), LLD, and a team-specific system design (BookMyShow, TinyURL, distributed rate limiter; a Senior Systems Engineer reported fraud detection with rate limiters). Questions about how you use GenAI tools appear in 2025 to 2026 screens (Hyderabad Ads Delivery, Nov 2025; Hyderabad SWE offer, May 2026). One Sep 2026 report (9 YOE Java role) lists an 'AI assisted coding round' in the loop; Aced (Oct 2026) says Apple 'hasn't announced or adopted the AI-assisted coding rounds that Meta and Google have started piloting', and interviewing.io says AI use is prohibited, so treat AI rounds as team experiments and ask your recruiter.
Online assessment¶
- Platform: Varies by team: CoderPad link or HackerRank-style assessment; many US teams skip the OA and start with a recruiter or hiring manager screen
- Format: Commonly 2 coding problems in 60 to 70 min (examples: two-bag knapsack, follow a path through a 15 x 10 grid), sometimes plus 15 to 20 MCQs on the team's stack (JavaScript/React, Java)
- Notes: Language may be fixed by the team (Java-only OAs reported for IS&T India). Difficulty easy to medium; time is the main constraint.
Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.
Coding rounds¶
- Rounds: 1 to 3 technical screens plus 1 to 3 onsite coding rounds (Aced); team-dependent
- Style: Medium LeetCode-style problems plus practical, team-mapped tasks: implement a data structure (thread-safe LRU, HashMap), Java concurrency, React components (nested tabs, rendering 1M rows), vague prompts that you must scope. Interviewers write their own questions; there is no central question bank (Aced, interviewing.io).
- Environment: Mostly CoderPad (copy-paste often blocked); some teams use your own laptop and IDE or a take-home assignment; FaceTime/Zoom or in person. Plan to work without AI unless told otherwise.
- Graded on: Working, dry-run code; data structure choice; core language depth; trade-off reasoning; communication; fit with the team's domain. Hiring manager weight is high and behavioral signal matters as much as coding for many teams (interviewing.io).
- Reported focus topics: Hash maps and arrays, LRU cache and other design-a-class problems (time-based key-value store, hit counter), Linked lists and heaps (merge k sorted), Graphs and topological sort (course schedule), Trees and BSTs, Intervals, Dynamic programming basics (knapsack, coin change), Concurrency and thread safety, Core language internals for the team's stack (Java, Swift, JavaScript/React), OS, networking and database fundamentals
Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

Beyond LeetCode¶
Domain deep dives in the team's stack (iOS, React output prediction and hooks, Java/Spring Boot theory, OS and networking fundamentals); take-home assignments chosen by the hiring manager (interviewing.io); presenting a past project (Aced blog); code review or design-pattern refactoring in an LLD round (Sep 2026 report); vague, scoped-by-you prompts such as a vote counter that must batch millions of ballots.
System design¶
Rare for ICT2 new grads and interns, though IS&T intern candidates ask about HLD/LLD basics and India junior loops include an LLD-flavored round. ICT3 and above get team-specific design focused on reliability, privacy and on-device vs cloud trade-offs (Aced; interviewing.io notes Apple interviewers 'love to hear about reliability').
Start with who needs system design, then the framework.
Behavioral¶
Framework: No published interview framework; team-run behavioral and hiring manager rounds built around 'Why Apple?', collaboration, invention and results; Apple's shared values (accessibility, privacy, environment, inclusion) (official page)
What they look for:
- A genuine, specific 'Why Apple?' and why this team (asked repeatedly)
- Passion for Apple products tied to your own story
- Collaboration across teams with limited guidance
- Invention: original solutions in your projects
- Results despite setbacks, with outcomes
- Depth on your own projects and technical decisions
- Discretion and comfort with a secretive, siloed culture
- How you use GenAI tools day to day (2025 to 2026 screens)
Questions to prepare:
- Why Apple? Why this team?
- Walk me through your resume and the work you are most proud of.
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team without sufficient guidance.
- Tell me about a time you came up with an innovative solution in a project.
- Tell me about a time you had a setback and still delivered.
- Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a peer.
- Tell me about a time you delivered in a short time and reprioritized work.
- What GenAI tools do you use day to day, and how do they improve your efficiency?
- Given Apple values like deep expertise and drive for excellence, how have you shown them in your career?
Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.
Tips¶
- Ask your recruiter forced-choice questions about each round (LeetCode-style vs domain deep dive, which language) because every team runs its own loop (interviewing.io).
- Prepare a specific 'Why Apple, why this team' story tied to products you use; some interviewers reject on this alone (interviewing.io).
- Study the team's stack in depth: Java concurrency and Spring for IS&T backend roles, React hooks and DOM for frontend, Swift and iOS for app teams.
- Apply to several Apple teams at once; you can run parallel processes.
- Practice medium problems on CoderPad with copy-paste off and dry-run your own tests.
- For India IS&T internships, revise CS fundamentals (networking, DNS, caching, OS, DBMS) along with DSA and your projects.
- Expect delays between rounds and after a verbal offer; follow up politely and keep other processes alive.
- Do not plan on AI help in interviews; confirm the rules with your recruiter.
4-week plan for Apple¶
Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.
- Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
- Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
- Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
- Week 4: Write 8 stories for the No published interview framework; team-run behavioral and hiring manager rounds built around 'Why Apple?', collaboration, invention and results; Apple's shared values (accessibility, privacy, environment, inclusion) round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: Re-verified Oct 4, 2026 by a second agent: every URL in sources returned HTTP 200 and showed the claimed content, except jobs.apple.com/en-us/details/200678510, which now says 'this role does not exist or is no longer available' and was removed. LeetCode Discuss posts and problem slugs re-checked via LeetCode's GraphQL API (Maximum Weight in Two Bags, Minimum Runes to Add to Cast Spell are LeetCode Premium problems). Apple publishes no official interview prep page, so interview_prep_url is empty; process facts come from Aced, interviewing.io and candidate posts and vary heavily by team. CORRECTED in this pass: 'India' and 'IS&T' removed from the ICT2 off-campus OA roles (the post states neither); the 15 x 10 grid OA was from a 5.5 YOE IS&T Hyderabad candidate, not an ICT2 candidate; 'Hyderabad, 6 months + PPO' removed from the India IS&T intern entry (not in the source); unsourced 'some new grads are leveled ICT3' removed; onsite round counts now cite each source's number; the Vision Pro intern post only states one 45-min interview; OA locations and MCQ counts now match each post. Public data skews toward India IS&T and experienced roles; US new grad (ICT2) reports are sparse. The Sep 2026 'AI assisted coding round' is a single report for a 9-YOE role and conflicts with Aced and interviewing.io [UNVERIFIED as a general practice]. Levels.fyi ICT2 has only 14 recent data points. Apple's 'Shared Values' page is about accessibility, environment, privacy and inclusion, not an interview rubric; the Collaboration/Invention/Results grouping comes from one intern's report. Jugal's Substack has no Apple-specific post.
