- Check each lab page for "prospective students" instructions. Follow them exactly.
- Send the email below to 5 professors. Follow up once after 7 to 10 days.
- If a professor says yes, ask for a concrete first task you can finish in 2 weeks.
Subject: [Year] [Major] student interested in [specific topic] research in your lab
Dear Professor [Last name],
I'm a [year] [major] student at [School]. I read your paper "[Title]" and [one sentence on what you understood or found interesting].
I have [one relevant skill or course with a grade or project, e.g., built X in Python, A in Machine Learning].
Do you have room for an undergraduate researcher in [semester or summer]? I can commit [N] hours a week and am happy to start with any task that is useful to the lab.
My resume and transcript are attached.

Open source programs¶
These are paid, remote, and open to many international students. They are not job pipelines: GSoC says it "is not a recruitment program" and Outreachy says its internships are "not linked to employment". What you get is code review on real projects, which is resume proof.
| Program | Pay | Length | When to apply | Who can apply | F-1 note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Summer of Code | Stipend (varies by country) | 8 to 22 week projects, coding from late May | 2026 contributor window was Mar 16 to 31, 2026 (timeline). Expect a similar window in March 2027 | 18+, students or open source beginners, accepted no more than once before | Google cannot provide CPT or OPT letters (FAQ). Ask your international office first |
| Outreachy | $7,000 USD | 3 months, 30 hours a week | May cohort: applications around February (2026: Feb 6 to 13). December cohort: early to mid August | People underrepresented in tech, per its eligibility rules | Your visa must allow 30 hours a week. US student-visa holders can shift dates up to 5 weeks. Outreachy provides documentation for your CPT application once selected |
| LFX Mentorship | $1,000 to $6,600, adjusted by country from a $6,000 base, paid half at midterm and half at the end (stipends) | 12 weeks | Spring term (Mar to May) listed mid-January, Summer (Jun to Aug) listed mid-April, Fall (Sep to Nov) listed mid-July. About 4-week windows (timelines) | Open to many countries. Linux Foundation and CNCF projects | Check work authorization with your DSO |
| MLH Fellowship | Educational stipend | 12 weeks, remote | Rolling start dates | Tracks: Software Engineering, Production Engineering (SRE), Web3 | Check with your DSO before accepting a stipend |
How to get selected for GSoC (start in January)¶
- In January, browse past accepted organizations in the GSoC archive. Shortlist 4 whose code you can build on your laptop. The new list came out on Feb 19 in 2026.
- Read the GitHub guide to your first open source contribution. Build each shortlisted project locally.
- When the accepted list is published, keep the 2 organizations that made it. Join each one's chat and introduce yourself in 3 lines: who you are, what you can do, which project idea interests you.
- Fix 2 or 3 small issues before the proposal window. Use Good First Issue or the org's own "good first issue" label.
- Write your proposal early. Include a week-by-week plan, the issues you already fixed (with links), and what is out of scope.
- Ask a mentor to review your draft at least a week before the deadline.
- Submit in the contributor window (mid to late March, if 2027 follows 2026). Not selected? Keep contributing and apply to LFX (summer term listed mid-April) or Outreachy (August).
AI fellowships and residencies¶
| Program | What it is | Status (Oct 2026) | Work authorization | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic Fellows Program | 4 months of full-time AI safety, security, ML systems or economics research. $3,850 USD per week (also listed in GBP and CAD), about $15,000 a month in compute. No PhD or papers needed | ACTIVE. Apply by Oct 18, 2026 for the January cohort. Rolling | Must already have work authorization in the US, UK or Canada and be located there. No visa sponsorship (job post) | Official process: application and reference check, technical assessments and interviews, research discussion. Over 65% of fellows have published and over 35% later joined Anthropic. Jugal's prep plan: How to land Anthropic's $3,850/week fellowship |
| Anthropic Claude Corps | 12-month paid fellowship placing early-career AI-skilled people inside nonprofits. Fellows are employed by CodePath at $85,000 a year. No degree required | ACTIVE. Cohort 3 applications opened at the end of September 2026 for an August 2027 start | 18+ and authorized to work in the US without employer sponsorship. F-1 CPT, OPT and STEM OPT do not qualify | No cap on years of experience, but it is built for people at the start of their careers. Jugal's breakdown: Anthropic will pay you $85K |
| OpenAI Residency | 6-month program with a full salary | CLOSED. "Applications for the 2026 Residency are now closed" | Not stated | Watch the page |
| OpenAI Student Collective | Paid campus lead role for undergrads, in pairs | Fall 2026 cohort closed. The page accepts applications for future cohorts | Work authorization in the country you study in | Reuse Jugal's video and short-answer playbook from OpenAI will pay you to lead AI on your campus for any campus program |
| Apple AIML Residency | One-year residency. The 2026 call was posted Nov 7, 2025 | Next call expected around November | Check the call | Set a reminder for early November 2026 |
Watch out: A stipend is paid work. International students must confirm with their international student office before accepting any stipend, fellowship or campus-lead pay.

Conference scholarships and travel grants¶
Conferences double as recruiting events, and company travel grants can cover flights and hotels. Jugal did his UIUC master's without paying tuition, funding it through scholarships, assistantships and "a lot of applying to things other people never bothered with" (conference scholarships post).
- Read Jugal's conference scholarships post. It has 30 program links and his 5-step method: check eligibility, collect deadlines in one place, build base material once, tailor each one, submit early and stack awards.
- Check the Citadel Conference Travel Grant. It covers a conference pass, airfare, lodging and meals, plus Citadel recruiting events. The NeurIPS 2026 grant deadline is Oct 5, 2026.
- Check NeurIPS 2026 Financial Assistance and the USENIX student grants hub for systems conferences.
- Run Jugal's mentor prompt (below) once with your background, then tailor per program.
- At the conference, collect 5 names and send each a thank-you note within 24 hours. Templates on career fairs.
You are an expert scholarship application mentor who has helped students win conference scholarships and travel grants.

Pick your programs in 20 minutes¶
- Write your graduation month and year, citizenship or visa status, and country of enrollment on one line.
- Go down each table above. Strike every row you are not eligible for.
- From what is left, pick 3: one program open now, one with a deadline in the next 90 days, and one backup (open source or research).
- Put all 3 deadlines in your calendar with a reminder 14 days before each.
- Add the regular SWE intern postings from finding and applying. Programs are extra shots, not a replacement.
