All-in-one HR, IT and finance platform; interviews are practical multi-part coding (payroll, expenses, deliveries), LLD, and AI-assisted coding rounds. Updated October 2026.

Rippling at a glance
Category High-growth tech
Intern level US Summer 2027: Full Stack Software Engineer Intern, Software Engineer Intern (Backend Focused), Machine Learning Software Engineer Intern, Data Science Intern; the ML SWE intern also has a Winter 2027 term. US postings describe a 13-week internship. India interns are hired mostly through campus drives for the Bangalore program.
New grad level L5 Software Engineer (Levels.fyi lists L5 as US entry level, 0 to 1 yrs); SDE-1 in Bangalore (0 to 2 yrs per a Feb 2026 post).
0 to 3 years L5 to L6. L6 = Software Engineer II (US) / SDE-2 (India). Candidates with about 2 to 3 yrs report SDE-2 offers (Sep 2026, Apr 2026 posts); a 1.9 yrs candidate was moved from SDE-1 to the SDE-2 track (Aug 2025).
Online assessment HackerRank : India SDE-1 / campus: 60 min, 2 DSA questions (medium to hard), proctored with webcam and screen share. US intern (Jul 2026): 4 MCQ + 3 coding. Frontend intern (India 2025): React + TypeScript task + 1 DSA, two rounds.
Coding rounds New grad / SDE-1: 1 screen + 2 to 3 onsite (DSA + LLD). SWE II: 1 screen + 2 machine coding + 1 system design.
Behavioral Rippling Leadership Principles (9), assessed mainly in the hiring manager round
Timeline interviewing.io and TechPrep: 4 to 6 weeks typical, as fast as 2 weeks. Example SDE-1 (1 yr exp, 2026): applied Apr 6, HR call Apr 14, coding and LLD rounds Apr 21 and 22, HM round rescheduled several times, then 'roles have gone on hold' on May 13. Several 2025 to 2026 posts report silence after HM or after a passed phone screen. Feedback after rounds is often fast when the role is live (SF offer, Mar 2026). One Jul 2026 candidate says July scheduling drags because of a company summit. Intern: Summer 2027 postings opened around Sep 21, 2026, rolling review.
New grad pay Levels.fyi (US, page updated Oct 4, 2026): L5 entry median total comp USD 206K (base 171K, stock 32.2K/yr, bonus 2.6K); L6 SWE II USD 291K. Levels.fyi lists Rippling equity as options with a main schedule of 25% per year over 4 years; alternate schedules shown are a 1-year cliff then monthly, and 40/30/20/10. Summer 2027 SWE intern: USD 10,500/month in SF, NYC, Seattle (ats.rippling.com postings). India (LeetCode Discuss): SDE-1 with 1 yr exp INR 43.5 lakh fixed + 4.75 lakh variable, no stock (Jun 2025); SDE-1 offer bands INR 36 or 40 LPA + 10% bonus by interview performance (Feb 2026); SDE-2 at 2 to 3 yrs INR 59 to 63 lakh base (2026), one with USD 12.5K ESOPs vesting 40/30/20/10 (Sep 2026). Frontend intern India: INR 1 lakh/month (May 2025).

Interview process

New grad

  1. Application or referral. Apply on ats.rippling.com. interviewing.io notes hiring is decentralized by team and referrals may skip initial assessments. No US new grad posting was open on Oct 4, 2026 (only Summer/Winter 2027 intern postings); Rippling calls the intern program a direct funnel to full time.
  2. Online assessment (mainly India SDE-1 and campus). HackerRank, 60 min, 2 DSA questions rated medium to hard, heavily proctored (webcam and screen share). Reported: max transfer time between two servers in a tree (tree diameter) and min time to run processes on capacity-limited processors (Jan 2025 OA); longest path in an undirected graph and a sliding window + binary search question, rated medium (campus OA before a Dec 2024 loop); a next-greater-element variant (Jan 2026).
  3. Recruiter call. 15 to 30 min. Background, current comp, notice period, interview availability, light behavioral if no referral. interviewing.io advises not stating salary expectations here.
  4. Technical phone screen / DSA round 1. 60 min on HackerRank CodePair. Story-style, multi-part problem where each part builds on the last; you write working code and the interviewer runs test cases (sometimes hidden). Most reported: delivery driver cost tracker (addDriver, addDelivery, getTotalCost, then payUpToTime and getUnpaidCost, then max simultaneous drivers in last 24h). In many 2025 to 2026 US/London screens you may use any AI tool in your own IDE and paste back into HackerRank.
  5. Onsite: LLD / machine coding. 60 min (some 90 min). Build an extensible in-memory system: Employee Access Management (grant, revoke, retrieve with READ/WRITE/ADMIN), Resource Manager, expense rules engine, article voting tracker. Graded on classes/entities, clean code, edge cases, follow-ups on scaling and alternatives.
  6. Onsite: DSA round 2. 60 min. Median of Two Sorted Arrays variant appears in three separate SDE-1 reports (Aug 2025, Jan 2026, Feb 2026); also graph/topological sort and org-tree height problems. A weak DSA round can trigger an extra DSA round the next day (Aug 2025 report).
  7. Hiring manager round. 60 min. Deep dive on one project you owned (some candidates present a PPT), design decisions, trade-offs, 'why X' follow-ups; campus candidates also got DBMS (keys, normal forms) and OOP questions plus standard behavioral (conflict, 5 to 8 year goals).

Intern

  1. Application. Summer 2027 postings (Full Stack SWE Intern, Backend Focused SWE Intern, ML SWE Intern, Data Science Intern) went live on ats.rippling.com around Sep 21, 2026 for SF, NYC and Seattle; a Winter 2027 ML SWE intern posting is also listed. Rippling's Dec 2025 blog said it planned to hire over 150 interns in 2026, more than double 2025, across SF, NYC and Bangalore (May to September everywhere, plus January to May sessions in US offices).
  2. Online assessment. HackerRank: 4 multiple-choice + 3 coding questions (Full Stack SWE Intern, NYC, reported Jul 2026). India frontend intern (May 2025): two OAs, each a React + TypeScript component task plus one DSA problem.
  3. Technical screen. 60 min live coding with an engineer, LeetCode/story style (US, 2026). India on-campus (Aug 2026): HackerRank with interviewer, 3 build-up questions (document length counting only words, most frequent word, top k frequent words); full working code with edge cases and sample tests.
  4. Follow-up rounds. India on-campus (Aug 2026): project walkthrough with code opened, then OS, OOP, DBMS basics. India frontend intern (May 2025): projects, JS closures, React hooks (useEffect, useCallback, useMemo), event loop, deployment, Git, teamwork conflict. US intern loops beyond the screen were not documented in free sources.

With 1 to 3 years of experience

For 1 to 3 yrs: SDE-1 (0 to 2 yrs, India) = OA + DSA + LLD + HM. Around 2 yrs you can be routed to the SWE II / SDE-2 loop: phone screen (delivery cost tracker, AI allowed), HM or 'department' screen (past projects, on-call, behavioral), then onsite with 2 machine-coding rounds (expense rules engine, music analytics with most-played-by-unique-users and recently played, article voting) and 1 system design (Google News style aggregator at SWE and SDE-2 level; a hotel system in a Jul 2026 SWE onsite; booking system and Stack Overflow APIs in a senior loop). One Jul 2026 SWE candidate had a system design phone screen (news aggregation), an HM project chat, then a 2-day onsite with system design, project deep dive and an AI coding round. interviewing.io says system design is used for leveling. A 7 yrs candidate got Strong Hire on coding but No Hire on HLD and was rejected (Sep 2025): do not skip HLD prep at SWE II.

Online assessment

  • Platform: HackerRank
  • Format: India SDE-1 / campus: 60 min, 2 DSA questions (medium to hard), proctored with webcam and screen share. US intern (Jul 2026): 4 MCQ + 3 coding. Frontend intern (India 2025): React + TypeScript task + 1 DSA, two rounds.
  • Notes: Not every candidate gets an OA; referrals and US experienced candidates often start at the phone screen. Reported OA topics: tree diameter, graph longest path, sliding window + binary search, processor scheduling, next greater element variant.

Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.

Coding rounds

  • Rounds: New grad / SDE-1: 1 screen + 2 to 3 onsite (DSA + LLD). SWE II: 1 screen + 2 machine coding + 1 system design.
  • Style: Practical, product-flavored, multi-part (payroll, deliveries, expense policies, voting) with follow-ups every 15 to 20 min, plus some classic LeetCode medium/hard (Median of Two Sorted Arrays, topological sort, parentheses). Candidates repeatedly say the question pool is small and repeats.
  • Environment: HackerRank CodePair; code must run. In AI-assisted rounds you may use ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude, Copilot etc. in your own IDE, then paste into HackerRank for audit and delete local files/chat history (Jun 2026 post). A Sep 2026 candidate describes picking 'the option where the AI helps write the code', so some screens offer an AI or no-AI choice; a Feb 2026 candidate was told the question would differ with an LLM but says it did not. Candidate choice of language; Java/C++ means more OOP boilerplate (one C++ candidate ran short of time).
  • Graded on: Working code that passes interviewer tests, extensible OOP design, edge cases, time/space complexity, handling follow-ups, money handling (Decimal/BigDecimal, rounding rules), and in AI rounds whether you make the design decisions yourself.
  • Reported focus topics: In-memory service design with classes (LLD / machine coding), Time intervals and time-based accounting (payments up to time, overlapping deliveries), Hash maps, heaps, prefix sums for fast aggregate queries, Graphs: topological sort, DFS/BFS, shortest path, tree diameter, org trees, Binary search: Median of Two Sorted Arrays, Parentheses and string parsing, Money arithmetic with Decimal/BigDecimal and rounding, Extensible rules engines (strategy pattern), Using AI coding tools under observation, HLD for SWE II: news aggregator, booking/hotel reservation

Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

What they ask (data)

Based on 6 distinct problems tagged to Rippling in the last 6 months (4 in the last 30 days, 5 in the last 3 months, 30 all-time) across two open datasets of LeetCode company tags. Tags are user-reported, so treat frequency as a signal, not a promise.

Difficulty mix (last 6 months): Medium 83%, Hard 17%

Most tagged topics (share of problems): Array 50%, String 33%, Hash Table 33%, Binary Search 17%, Divide and Conquer 17%, Tree 17%, Depth-First Search 17%, Sliding Window 17%, Stack 17%, Greedy 17%

Watch out: Rippling has thin LeetCode data. Weight the reported questions and the format notes above more than this list.

Most frequent problems

Beyond LeetCode

AI-assisted coding round (60 min, real-world problem such as a corporate card expense policy engine; interviewer watches how you drive the AI, introduced around mid 2025 and common in 2026 reports); machine coding / LLD; hiring manager project presentation; frontend 'Web Fundamentals' round and frontend system design for frontend roles; React + TypeScript OA for frontend interns; ML intern has an ML round.

System design

New grad / SDE-1: no HLD; LLD/machine coding is the design signal (employee access management, resource manager, rules engine). SWE II and above: 60 min HLD used for leveling (news aggregator like Google News, hotel system, booking system, Stack Overflow APIs; interviewing.io also lists news or shopping recommendation engine and file sharing). A senior candidate says interviewers expected a full-length answer rather than a guided discussion.

Start with who needs system design, then the framework.

Behavioral

Framework: Rippling Leadership Principles (9), assessed mainly in the hiring manager round (official page)

What they look for:

  • Go and see: firsthand understanding of problems
  • Push the limits of possible
  • Go to Western Union: ownership beyond your lane
  • Build winning teams
  • Challenge each other directly
  • Decide quickly
  • Are right, a lot
  • Change their minds
  • Are frugal
  • Deep ownership of one project you can present end to end with metrics

Questions to prepare:

  • Walk me through a project you fully owned (some candidates bring slides)
  • Why did you use MySQL? What would you optimize? What was the hardest part?
  • Tell me about a conflict in a group project and how you resolved it
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 to 8 years?
  • Talk about your on-call experience and past projects
  • What SLAs did your service have and how did you divide tasks across the team?
  • Have you mentored juniors or interns?

Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.

Tips

  • Drill the repeat pool in your own IDE until each takes under 45 min including follow-ups: delivery driver cost tracker, expense rules engine, article voting tracker, employee access management.
  • Store money as Decimal/BigDecimal or integer cents and be ready to explain why; a 2026 interviewer flagged a 0.005 rounding error and asked how real financial systems round.
  • Run and test your code as you go; interviewers paste in test cases and expect clean, working code, not pseudocode.
  • In AI-assisted rounds, state the design and entities out loud first, write the core logic yourself, let the AI do boilerplate and tests, and use a fast model; delete local files and chat history afterwards if asked.
  • Design for extension from part 1 (interfaces or rule classes) because new parts arrive every 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Pick one project you fully owned and prepare a 10 minute walkthrough (problem, design, trade-offs, metrics); some candidates brought slides to the HM round.
  • For India SDE-1, expect a proctored 60 min HackerRank OA with 2 medium to hard questions; practice trees, graphs, sliding window and binary search.
  • Apply in the first weeks: Summer 2027 intern roles (USD 10,500/month) opened Sep 21, 2026 and review is rolling.

4-week plan for Rippling

Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.

  • Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
  • Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
  • Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
  • Week 4: Write 8 stories for the Rippling Leadership Principles (9), assessed mainly in the hiring manager round round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: No US new grad (L5) posting was live on Oct 4, 2026, so the US new grad loop is inferred from US SWE/SWE II and India SDE-1 reports. India and US loops differ: India SDE-1 = OA + DSA + LLD + HM; US = phone screen + machine coding + (SWE II) system design + HM. AI-assisted rounds are widespread in 2026 reports but not universal; one candidate was told questions differ with and without an LLM and says they did not. Levels.fyi labels L5 as entry level; Rippling does not publish its ladder. Rippling Academy details come from an Apr 2024 blog and may have changed. 1point3acres intern threads are paywalled and were not used. Jugal's startup-offer post lists Rippling under the hxu296 company-wise repo, but that repo has no Rippling file (checked Oct 4, 2026); use the liquidslr or snehasishroy repos instead. Company-tagged LeetCode lists (liquidslr: Median of Two Sorted Arrays, Design Ride Sharing System, Count Pairs of Connectable Servers, Design Spreadsheet, Maximize Amount After Two Days of Conversions) are frequency data, not dated reports. Reddit and Glassdoor pages could not be fetched (403), so they are not cited. PracHub experience pages are curated and edited (often translated) reports, not verbatim posts. Verification (Oct 4, 2026): every URL in sources was fetched and confirmed [VERIFIED]; LeetCode Discuss posts were read through LeetCode GraphQL API because their HTML returns 403 to scripts. Fact-check pass (Oct 4, 2026): all URLs re-fetched (HTTP 200; LeetCode posts and problem slugs re-checked through the GraphQL API). Corrected: vesting (was 'equal quarterly'; Levels.fyi shows 25%/yr main schedule with cliff-monthly and 40/30/20/10 alternates), 150+ interns is a stated hiring plan, the Oct 2025 referral loop does not state a US location, the Apr 2026 SDE-1 example does not state India, booking system and Stack Overflow APIs came from a senior loop. Added 2026 PracHub AI-round reports (Camel Cards, filtered parent tasks, task-scheduling AI onsite) and two LeetCode Discuss questions. Process cross-checked against interviewing.io, TechPrep (2026) and 2025 to 2026 LeetCode Discuss, Taro and PracHub reports.
