Interview process

New grad

  1. Apply. [2027] Software Engineer, Early Career posting (San Mateo; onsite Tue to Thu). Roblox lets you redact age, date of birth and graduation dates from your resume.
  2. Roblox assessment (first interview). Sent to early-career applicants. Three parts you can take at once or over a week: problem-solving games built on Roblox (Robots, Factory, Outpost: Mars), a decision-making situational test (Aug 2026 report: 23 workplace scenarios, pick most and least effective), and a coding evaluation plus algorithmic reasoning (Aug 2026 report: CodeSignal, 2 problems in 50 min, unproctored). Practice games Kaiju Cats and Coding Cookies are untimed. Results in a few weeks after calibration.
  3. Virtual onsite / superday. Sep 2026 early-career onsite: two coding interviews (counting valid hat assignments and maximizing points; a Candy Crush simulation). Jul 2026 report: superday with several LeetCode medium-to-hard questions and behavioral questions that require specific, not generic, answers. Roblox offers Speak_ courses covering the virtual onsite stages; more than half of last year's early-career hires used it.
  4. Team matching and offer. You learn about teams (Infra, Engine, Search and Discovery, Foundational AI, Economy), chat with engineering managers, rank preferences, and are matched a few weeks before your start date (official FAQ).

Intern

  1. Apply. [Summer 2027] Software Engineer Intern, San Mateo, $62/hr. Internships are open to all class levels.
  2. Roblox assessment. Same assessment as new grad. Oct 2025 intern report: four tasks (two problem-solving games, one decision-making test, two LeetCode-style questions). A first-year candidate solved both coding questions in under 10 min and was still rejected, so the games and situational test matter.
  3. Early Careers virtual interview. Virtual technical interviews follow the assessment (Aug 2025 post); format mirrors the new grad onsite: coding on CodeSignal with an interviewer, plus behavioral.
  4. Team matching. Interns rank team preferences and are matched a few weeks before day one.

With 1 to 3 years of experience

Official experienced process has five parts: recruiter fit and interest call, hiring manager interview (experience, technical breadth and depth, project management, leadership, agility, motivation), technical assessment (either coding or system design, on CodeSignal), onsite (deeper hiring manager conversation, the other technical assessment, a Project Deep Dive only for Machine Learning or Senior Engineering Manager candidates), and a final leadership interview on Vision and Values. Reports from 2025 to 2026 add a 'creativity' round for IC3 (classic elevator design), engine-team system design (resource loader, pub/sub), and gaming-twist system design (likes, favorites, matchmaking, notification center, scheduled payments, image feed) probed hard on scale. interviewing.io calls the extra round a bar raiser testing creativity and values.

Online assessment

  • Platform: Roblox custom game-based assessment plus CodeSignal coding
  • Format: Problem-solving games built on Roblox (Robots, Factory, Outpost: Mars), situational decision-making questions (about 23 reported), and a coding section (2 problems in about 50 min reported Aug 2026) with an algorithmic reasoning section. Can be completed in one sitting or over a week; extensions available by ticket.
  • Notes: Practice games: Kaiju Cats (mirrors Robots and Factories) and Coding Cookies (block-coding interface used in Outpost: Mars). In Outpost: Mars, only functions packaged during the testing phase can be called later. Do not treat the games as a formality.

Coding rounds

  • Rounds: Early career: 2 coding interviews in the virtual onsite; experienced: 1 technical screen plus 1 to 2 onsite coding rounds
  • Style: LeetCode medium to hard with real-world or game framing and long specs: topological load order for avatar parts, sliding-window rate limiter, most frequent call stack from logs, grid simulation (Candy Crush style), hat assignments with bitmask DP, prefix-ranked query suggestions. Lots of engineering detail; candidates say interviewers like a clean first-pass solution over long debugging.
  • Environment: CodeSignal (interviewer shares the link over Zoom or in person). LLMs are prohibited and using them disqualifies you; looking up syntax or standard library calls is allowed if you ask first. Use one language throughout.
  • Graded on: Official: communication, problem-solving (comparing solutions, right data structures, complexity, optimization), curiosity (clarifying questions), keeping it real (real-world risks and edge cases), product knowledge; plus testing your code, defensive programming and readable, idiomatic code. Near-optimal and implemented beats optimal and unfinished.
  • Reported focus topics: Grid simulation (crush, gravity, robots, lasers), Topological sort with stable ordering and cycle detection, Intervals and merging, Sliding windows and rate limiting, Hash map counting over logs and call stacks, Bitmask DP and backtracking, Tries and heaps for ranking, Gaming-flavored system design: matchmaking, likes and favorites counters, notifications

Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

What they ask (data)

Based on 6 distinct problems tagged to Roblox in the last 6 months (0 in the last 30 days, 3 in the last 3 months, 54 all-time) across two open datasets of LeetCode company tags. Tags are user-reported, so treat frequency as a signal, not a promise.

Difficulty mix (last 6 months): Medium 50%, Hard 33%, Easy 17%

Most tagged topics (share of problems): Array 67%, Design 50%, Data Stream 50%, Two Pointers 17%, Matrix 17%, Simulation 17%, Binary Search 17%, Queue 17%, Dynamic Programming 17%, Bit Manipulation 17%

Watch out: Roblox has thin LeetCode data. Weight the reported questions and the format notes above more than this list.

Beyond LeetCode

Game-based cognitive assessments built on Roblox (Robots, Factory, Outpost: Mars), situational judgment test, creativity or bar-raiser round (design an elevator, improve an everyday system, often with a gaming twist), Vision and Values leadership round, Project Deep Dive for Machine Learning and Senior Engineering Manager candidates (official), vanilla HTML/CSS/JS exercises with no framework (six hold-to-play piano keys in an Aug 2026 senior frontend phone screen; an auto-rotating traffic light tagged as a SWE onsite question on PracHub, Oct 2026).

System design

Official guidance: system design usually comes in later stages with the broader team but can appear in the technical assessment; example question 'Design a system to let people pay other people using phone numbers as unique identifiers'. Graded on clarification, understanding operational requirements, endpoint and request/response design, contention handling, clusters and load balancers, scale, debugging and monitoring. New grads mainly face coding; design is core from IC2 up. Reported prompts: matchmaking service grouping players of similar skill into groups of 16 (500k concurrent players), like or favorites counters at Roblox scale, real-time shared to-do list, in-app notification center, scheduled payments, resource loader with disk and CDN, image feed. Some loops get low-level design: a bump allocator and a multithreaded ResourceLoader (Apr 2025 full loop), and a multi-type resource loader plus a ROS-like pub/sub for an engine-team role (Sep 2025).

Start with who needs system design, then the framework.

Behavioral

Framework: Roblox values: Take the Long View, Get Stuff Done, Respect the Community, We Are Responsible. Official answer structure: Situation, Approach, Action, Outcome, Learnings. (official page)

What they look for:

  • Specific actions and outcomes rather than generic stories (behavioral rounds described as genuinely difficult)
  • Ownership of intended and unintended consequences (We Are Responsible)
  • Bias to execute and iterate (Get Stuff Done)
  • Long-term thinking even in short-term decisions
  • Safety, civility and community impact
  • Familiarity with the Roblox product: make an account and play before interviewing
  • Experience with high-traffic, high-scale systems (emphasized for experienced hires)

Questions to prepare:

  • Give critical feedback, resolve a team conflict, and course-correct after missing a metric (Sep 2025 report)
  • A non-fatal bug is found right before launch: what do you do? (situational test, Aug 2026)
  • An upstream team you depend on is late: how do you respond? (situational test, Aug 2026)
  • Tell me about difficult feedback or a disagreement with your manager
  • What excites you about Roblox and how do you want to grow?
  • Final round: how your career goals align with Roblox's long-term vision, and how you handle setbacks

Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.

Tips

  • Play the official practice games (Kaiju Cats, Coding Cookies) before the assessment and take it rested; candidates who aced the coding part still failed overall.
  • Answer the situational test like a responsible owner: assess risk, communicate early, look for a minimum viable alternative, never hide a bug.
  • Do not use any AI tool in Roblox interviews; Roblox says LLM use disqualifies you. Ask before googling syntax.
  • Write workable code on the first pass and test it yourself; interviewers reportedly dislike long debugging cycles.
  • Practice LeetCode 723 Candy Crush, 1434 hat assignments, 210 Course Schedule II and 56 Merge Intervals; they mirror 2025 to 2026 early-career and screen questions.
  • Make a Roblox account and play several experiences; 'knowledge of our product' is an official evaluation point.
  • For design, prepare matchmaking and like-counter systems and add a gaming twist (spiky concurrency, per-game limits, real-time updates).
  • International students: 2027 postings say Roblox may not employ candidates on certain US visa categories or support future H-1B sponsorship at this time. Confirm with the recruiter before investing weeks.

4-week plan for Roblox

Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.

  • Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
  • Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
  • Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
  • Week 4: Write 8 stories for the Roblox values: Take the Long View, Get Stuff Done, Respect the Community, We Are Responsible. Official answer structure: Situation, Approach, Action, Outcome, Learnings. round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: Official pages fetched 2026-10-04 (the Interviewing at Roblox hub content was read from its embedded page data because it is tabbed). The official hub is written mostly for experienced hires; early-career specifics come from the early-career page and 2025 to 2026 candidate reports. The creativity or bar-raiser round is reported for IC3 and above; it is unconfirmed for new grads. A Sep 2026 early-career candidate said recruiters had suggested DP would not be asked that year, yet got a DP problem, so treat recruiter topic hints loosely. Visa sponsorship language in the 2027 postings is a 2026 change worth flagging; it reads 'may not be able to', so policy may vary by case. LeetCode 723 Candy Crush and 642 are premium. LeetCode mappings for the hat, prefix and topological-sort questions are close equivalents, not verbatim. PracHub items are candidate reports curated and sometimes translated by PracHub. Fact-check pass 2026-10-04: the official hub limits the Project Deep Dive to Machine Learning and Senior Engineering Manager candidates (the profile had said 'ML or senior roles'); the traffic-light exercise is tagged Software Engineer, not frontend, on PracHub; design prompts (likes, favorites, notification center, scheduled payments, image feed) now cite their PracHub question pages; Levels.fyi intern rates and the $10,000 housing notes confirmed from levels.fyi/js/internshipData.json.
