Walmart Global Tech at a glance
Category Big Tech
Intern level US: 'Summer Intern: Software Engineer II' (Bentonville HQ, 11 weeks). India: 'Grad Intern' / SDE Intern (2 to 6 months, Bengaluru/Chennai).
New grad level Software Engineer II (Levels.fyi US code P2, entry level; India band IN2, which Indian candidates call 'equivalent to SDE-1').
0 to 3 years SWE II for 0 to 2 yrs; SWE III (US P3, India IN3) is the most-reported 1 to 4 yr level (2025 to 2026 India posts show 1 yr 10 mo to 3 yr 10 mo YOE); Senior SWE (India IN4) above.
Online assessment HackerRank (2026 off-campus and experienced; one Sep 2026 invitee called it the 'Walmart Full Stack OA'); HackerEarth or HirePro on Indian campuses; Karat for many US first-round screens. : 2026 HackerRank: 3 sections, (1) Software Fundamentals: 1 language-agnostic coding problem, (2) Front-end: bug fix or feature in React/Angular with AI assist, (3) Back-end: Node/Spring/Django task with AI assist. India campus 2024: 22 MCQs + 2 coding in 75 min (HirePro) or 10 MCQs + 2 coding in 90 min (HackerEarth). Off-campus SWE II Feb 2025: 25 MCQs (30 min) + 2 coding (40 min). A Jun 2026 assessment problem: minimum cost to pick a 'k-capable' set of ML models for every k.
Coding rounds 1 to 2 DSA rounds of 45 to 60 min, usually 2 problems each; the LLD round also expects code.
Behavioral Walmart values (respect the individual, act with integrity, serve our customers and members, strive for excellence) answered in STAR format; the hiring manager round carries most of it.
Timeline aced.io: 4 to 8 weeks from recruiter screen to offer. India SWE III drives: selection email about 2 weeks after the drive (Aug 2025). Silence after the OA is commonly reported (Sep 2026 posts). No Google-style hiring committee or team match reported: hiring is per team and requisition, and HM feedback decides. US internships post in early September for the following summer; India campus drives run Aug to Sep; India grad-intern postings appear Apr to Jun. A US hiring freeze in May 2025 put verbal offers on hold.
New grad pay US (Levels.fyi, as of Oct 4, 2026): SWE II (P2, entry) median total comp about $122K (base $112K, stock $5.8K/yr, bonus $4.5K); SWE III (P3) about $204K. The Summer 2026 SWE II intern posting listed an annual salary range of $80,000 to $155,000 (posting range, not intern-specific pay). India (Levels.fyi Greater Bengaluru): SWE II median about Rs 20.45 lakh, SWE III about Rs 32.7 lakh. Reported India new grad SWE II offers: Rs 18.25 lakh base + Rs 1.75 lakh incentive + Rs 2 lakh joining + Rs 2.25 lakh RSUs (Dec 2024 and May 2025 posts); India campus intern stipend Rs 1 lakh/month (Mar 2024). Reported SWE III Bengaluru offers: about Rs 32.5 lakh CTC with Rs 23 lakh fixed (3.1 YOE, Aug 2025); Rs 34.46 lakh (2.5 YOE, Feb 2026); Rs 28 lakh base + 20% year-end bonus + 10% joining bonus + Rs 9 lakh RSUs over 3 years (2 YOE, Sep 2026). India offer posts report RSUs vesting over 3 years; Levels.fyi lists both a 4-year (25% a year) and a 3-year (33.33% a year) schedule for Walmart.

Interview process

New grad

  1. Apply / shortlist. US: apply on careers.walmart.com (Workday); a recruiter screen covers background and a couple of simple technical questions (aced.io). Official Students page: a 24-month rotational Development Program for early-career hires, entered by completing the internship a year before graduation or by applying directly after graduation; free 'Discover Walmart' job simulations are offered. India campus: CGPA-based shortlist first (Sep 2024 campus post: about 98 shortlisted to OA, 30 to interviews, 6 offers).
  2. Online assessment. India campus (2024): HirePro, 75 min, 22 MCQs on OOP/OS/DBMS/CN/SQL (35 min) + 2 easy-medium coding (40 min); partial solutions still advanced. Off-campus SWE II (Feb 2025, applied via Workday, location not stated): 25 MCQs in 30 min (Java, OOP, DBMS, OS, SQL) + 2 coding in 40 min in Java. 2026 off-campus and experienced: a 3-section HackerRank test (coding, front-end, back-end) that a Sep 2026 invitee called the 'Full Stack OA'; the front-end and back-end tasks come with an AI assist.
  3. Technical screen (US). Many US roles start with a Karat-run interview: pick 2 topics from OOP, production troubleshooting, REST APIs, testing, databases, web development, then a coding problem where Karat expects fully executable code passing all tests (reported for SWE III and senior roles in 2025). aced.io describes a 1-hour HackerRank technical screen with 1 to 2 medium-to-hard questions.
  4. Technical interviews (2 to 3). 45 to 90 min each. India campus: Round 1 often has no coding and drills DBMS (all SQL joins on paper), CN (what happens when you send a WhatsApp message, OSI layers) and OS; Round 2 is a simple DSA problem (Spiral Matrix) with dry run. Off-campus SWE II (Feb 2025, location not stated): two coding rounds with 2 problems each (Surrounded Regions-like, Jump Game-like, Product of Array Except Self, Level Order Traversal), coded in a Google Doc, multiple approaches asked.
  5. Hiring manager / HR. Resume and in-depth project discussion, basic HashMap questions, behavioral. Candidates report rejection at this stage even after clearing all coding rounds (Feb 2025 off-campus SWE II).
  6. Offer. India campus results can be same day. US: offer via recruiter; a May 2025 US hiring freeze paused already-verbal offers (SWE III, Arkansas).

Intern

  1. Apply (US). Summer 2026 'Software Engineer II' intern posting went live Sep 9, 2025: 11 weeks at Bentonville HQ, for students in their penultimate year (graduating Dec 2026 to May 2027), housing/relocation if over 50 miles away, posting states 'IMMIGRATION SPONSORSHIP IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS ROLE'. Stack listed: JavaScript, React, Node, Java, Spring Boot, Cosmos DB, Docker, AI/ML.
  2. Sophomore Summit (US). Walmart ran a 'Spring Sophomore Summit Software Engineer II Intern' posting (WD2082057): a 3-day summit in Northwest Arkansas where invited students interview for an internship. The posting now returns 404 and no live copy was found, so treat this as historical and [UNVERIFIED].
  3. Apply (India). '(IND) Grad Intern - No Work Experience' postings for the 2027 batch appeared on Workday in Apr to Jun 2026, several Job IDs with the same JD; candidates report few OA invites and GPA-based shortlisting. Sparkathon (Walmart's hackathon): a member of a Sparkathon 2025 Top 11 team was emailed that they were being considered for a summer internship, with an assessment on Feb 25, 2026 (one post).
  4. OA + interviews (India campus). Mar 2024 campus drive: HackerEarth OA, 90 min, 10 MCQs (OS, DBMS, CN, DSA) + 2 coding (string swaps, reverse-DSU graph); then Tech 1 (projects, OS interrupts, binary tree min distance via BFS, 'what happens when you type google.com', SQL vs NoSQL, range-shift queries), Tech 2 (CV + project demo, stack using queues, free time slots across 3 students, normalization to BCNF, OOP live code, virtual functions), HR. 24 selected: 10 got FTE + 6-month internship, 14 internship only.
  5. Return offer. India: a separate PPO conversion interview after a 2-month summer internship is reported (Jul 2025). US: 76 former interns returned full time in 2026 (Walmart Global Tech blog, Jul 30, 2026).

With 1 to 3 years of experience

India SWE III (IN3, roughly 1 to 4 yrs) is mostly hired through hiring drives (often in-person at the Bengaluru office, all rounds in one day, every round eliminatory) after a HackerRank OA. Typical loop: R1 DSA (60 min, 2 medium or medium-hard problems: graphs, DP, sliding window, heaps), R2 LLD + Java (design patterns, SOLID, concurrency, HashMap internals, volatile; code LRU with generics, ThreadPoolExecutor, BookMyShow with locking, Jukebox, Parking Lot), sometimes a separate HLD round (rate limiter, ledger, ticket booking, chess leaderboard, key-value store), then a hiring manager round (often F2F) that mixes deep resume questions (Kafka partitioning, Spring Boot, JDBC, optimistic vs pessimistic locking) with scenario questions. Non-Java teams swap the stack: .NET/C# (Feb 2026), front-end with a React/JS round on promises, debouncing, throttling, call/apply/bind and the virtual DOM (Oct 2025), and Linux/C++ for the Vizio team with IPC and OS questions (Aug 2026 walk-in drive, which turned out to be for shortlisted candidates only). US SWE III/senior: Karat screen, then a loop such as 2 coding + 1 system design onsite (California, May 2025, as described by the recruiter) or coding + system design + behavioral (marketplace senior, Mar 2025).

Online assessment

  • Platform: HackerRank (2026 off-campus and experienced; one Sep 2026 invitee called it the 'Walmart Full Stack OA'); HackerEarth or HirePro on Indian campuses; Karat for many US first-round screens.
  • Format: 2026 HackerRank: 3 sections, (1) Software Fundamentals: 1 language-agnostic coding problem, (2) Front-end: bug fix or feature in React/Angular with AI assist, (3) Back-end: Node/Spring/Django task with AI assist.
  • Notes: Backend applicants still get the front-end section (Mar 2026 posts). Candidates report no call after a fully passed OA (Sep 2026: a Senior Full Stack applicant passed all DSA, front-end and back-end tests and heard nothing). Campus OAs advance partial solvers.

Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.

Coding rounds

  • Rounds: 1 to 2 DSA rounds of 45 to 60 min, usually 2 problems each; the LLD round also expects code.
  • Style: LeetCode medium with medium-hard follow-ups (Number of Islands then count distinct island shapes); practical data-structure design framed as backend problems (delayed retry scheduler for webhooks, per-merchant refund rate limiter).
  • Environment: US: Karat platform (executable code, tests). India: in-person drives at the Bengaluru office, shared docs (Google Doc reported in 2025), HackerRank for OA.
  • Graded on: Brute force to optimal with clear reasoning, time and space complexity, edge cases, complete working code (Karat requires passing tests), and in LLD the clarity of design choices over memorized code.
  • Reported focus topics: Graphs: islands, topological sort, BFS/DFS, Dynamic programming: coin change, target sum, subsets, Sliding window and monotonic deque, Heaps: median of stream, top K, Hashing and strings: anagrams, longest substring, LRU/LFU cache implementation, Java internals: HashMap, equals/hashCode, volatile, multithreading, executors, LLD with design patterns (Strategy, Observer, Factory, Singleton) and SOLID, DB concurrency: locking, isolation levels, HLD: rate limiter, booking systems, leaderboards, notification/retry systems, CS fundamentals for campus: DBMS/SQL joins, OS, CN, Front-end and back-end basics for the 2026 full-stack OA

Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

Beyond LeetCode

HackerRank OA with front-end (React/Angular) and back-end (Node/Spring/Django) project tasks plus an AI assist (2026). Karat screen with topic Q&A (OOP, production troubleshooting, REST, testing, databases, web) before coding. Java internals rounds (HashMap internals, equals/hashCode contract, volatile, multithreading, Java 17 features, JVM memory). India campus CS-fundamentals rounds (SQL joins on paper, OSI layers, OS concepts). HM rounds may ask you to write a regex, Spring Boot DB code, or a Strategy-pattern DB connector.

System design

New grads (India campus) get CS fundamentals (DBMS, CN, OS) instead of design. SWE II off-campus loops are DSA + HM. From SWE III (1+ yr) expect a dedicated LLD round in Java (Strategy/Observer/Factory/Singleton, SOLID, ThreadPoolExecutor, LRU, BookMyShow with DB locking and isolation levels) and often HLD (rate limiter, ledger, ticket booking, online chess with Redis-sorted-set leaderboards, key-value store, pharmacy prescription job scheduler with DLQs). US loops include one system design round, often supply chain or e-commerce flavored (aced.io); a Jul 2025 Walmart Vizio SWE II candidate was told by the recruiter to expect behavioral, coding and system design in a single hour with two engineers.

Start with who needs system design, then the framework.

Behavioral

Framework: Walmart values (respect the individual, act with integrity, serve our customers and members, strive for excellence) answered in STAR format; the hiring manager round carries most of it. (official page)

What they look for:

  • Customer focus: tie answers to the customer and to real retail problems (aced.io)
  • Ownership of everything on your resume, including tech you only used briefly
  • Collaboration with new teams and with less experienced teammates
  • Handling pressure and tight deadlines calmly
  • Clear, simple design trade-offs (over-engineering was penalized in a 2026 HLD round)

Questions to prepare:

  • Tell me about a time you made a mistake. (aced.io)
  • Why should we hire you for this role?
  • How do you collaborate with a newly joined team?
  • How would you handle team members who are less experienced or have lower skill levels?
  • How would you manage tight deadlines, such as working 12 hours a day for 5 days?
  • If a team member is distracted during your explanation, how would you handle it diplomatically?
  • Which design patterns have you used recently, and why?
  • What approach would you take to auto-scale your current project?

Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.

Tips

  • For SWE III drives, practice writing LLD as compiling Java (LRU with generics, ThreadPoolExecutor, BookMyShow with locking): 2025 to 2026 posts show LLD rounds expect code, not only class diagrams.
  • Revise Java internals before any Walmart loop: HashMap internals, equals/hashCode contract, volatile, executors, Java 17 features. They show up in R2 and in HM rounds.
  • If your first round is Karat (US), budget time: the interviewer reads the prompt aloud and topic questions take the first 10 minutes, and Karat expects fully executable code that passes tests.
  • Prepare for the 2026 HackerRank OA as full stack even if you applied for backend: one coding problem plus a React/Angular task and a Node/Spring/Django task.
  • Drive the design round yourself and keep it simple: one 2026 candidate lost an HLD round by over-engineering scaling in the last 10 minutes, another (Aug 2025) faced a disengaged interviewer and was rejected, so keep the structure moving without waiting for cues.
  • Know every resume line in depth: HM rounds asked Kafka partitioning, Spring Boot DB code, JDBC drivers and how you would auto-scale your project.
  • International students in the US: the Summer 2026 SWE II intern posting said immigration sponsorship is not available, so check the sponsorship line on each posting before investing time.
  • Indian students: campus drives, Sparkathon (top teams got an internship assessment in Feb 2026) and the spring 'Grad Intern' postings are the entry points; strong CGPA matters for shortlisting.

4-week plan for Walmart Global Tech

Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.

  • Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
  • Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
  • Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
  • Week 4: Write 8 stories for the Walmart values (respect the individual, act with integrity, serve our customers and members, strive for excellence) answered in STAR format; the hiring manager round carries most of it. round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: LeetCode Discuss pages block automated fetches; every discuss post here was read in full through LeetCode's own GraphQL API using the same topic ID. Most 2025 to 2026 reports are India SWE III (IN3) drives; US new grad and intern interview content is thin (no 2025 to 2026 US new grad loop write-up found), so the US flow is assembled from aced.io, the Karat posts (SWE III/senior) and official postings. Walmart has no technical interview prep page; 'How we hire' is generic. Sophomore Summit details are from a search snippet of a now-404 posting [UNVERIFIED]. Reddit, Glassdoor and Blind could not be fetched in this session (blocked), so no Reddit or Glassdoor quotes are included. OA format changed in 2026 to a full-stack HackerRank test with AI assist (no official name confirmed; one invitee called it the 'Full Stack OA'); campus OAs still vary by college and vendor. Levels.fyi labels P2 as SWE II and shows both 3-year and 4-year vesting schedules; India offer posts report 3-year RSU vesting. Hiring freezes (May 2025 US) and position closures can stall offers. Fact-check Oct 4, 2026: every LeetCode Discuss source re-read via the GraphQL API; careers URLs updated to their redirect targets; Sparkathon, Vizio, Sunnyvale and OA-name claims narrowed to what the posts say.
