Interview process¶
New grad¶
- Application (Emerging Talent). Apply to the Emerging Talent posting. As of Oct 4, 2026 the live posting is 'Software Engineer, Applied Emerging Talent (2027)' (San Francisco, posted Sep 14, 2026, 0 to 1 years, JavaScript/React plus a backend language (Python), Postgres/MySQL, $180K base plus equity). Join the Emerging Talent Community form for events and Q&As. Campus events can give priority links: a 2024 intern applied with a priority link from an OpenAI event at CMU.
- Online assessment (HackerRank). Two algorithmic questions. A Jan 2025 report: 110 minutes on HackerRank with camera on and full-screen share of all tabs. Oct 2025 Emerging Talent comments: one candidate said both questions were DP (one also a graph problem), another said 'brush up on DP'. A Nov 2024 OA email listed DP, graphs and arrays. Scored on test cases (one Oct 2025 candidate reported a full score on one question and 12/15 test cases on the other).
- Intro call. Official guide: a recruiter or hiring manager call about your work, academic experience, motivations and goals. Read OpenAI's recent blog posts, especially those related to the team.
- Virtual coding interview (60 min). Live practical coding, reported on CoderPad. Example from a new grad screen (Nov 2024): compute an account balance at any timestamp from unsorted post/delete events, close to Time Based Key-Value Store. Spring 2026 Emerging Talent interviews were on CoderPad with camera and mic on (Feb 2026 Reddit comment).
- Virtual final round. An Oct 18, 2025 Reddit comment (2026 new grad cycle) quoted a recruiter-made candidate portal: Application, Online Assessment, Virtual Coding Interview (60 min), Virtual Final Round (coding interview plus behavioral interview), Team Matching Interviews, Professional References, Offer, Onboard. The official guide describes final interviews generally as 4 to 6 hours with 4 to 6 people over 1 to 2 days, virtual by default with an optional onsite in San Francisco.
- Team matching, references, offer. Same candidate portal (Oct 2025, 2026 new grad cycle): Team Matching Interviews, then Professional References, then Offer. Official guide: expect a decision within one week of final interviews; the recruiter may ask for references at this stage.
Intern¶
- Application. Internships run under Emerging Talent. A Summer 2025 SWE intern applied after an OpenAI event at their university (Sep 18, 2024).
- HackerRank OA. Two questions; the Nov 2024 OA email listed DP, graphs and arrays. The same intern reported a full score (Sep 26, 2024).
- Technical interview. One live technical interview (Oct 16, 2024 in that report).
- Virtual onsite. Another technical interview plus a project walkthrough round (the candidate called it a 'project deep-dive') on your own work (Oct 30, 2024).
- Offer. Verbal offer about 2 months after the event (Nov 15, 2024). Reported Summer 2025 package: $60/hr plus about $7,000 sign-on, 12 weeks in San Francisco, no housing stipend.
With 1 to 3 years of experience¶
For 1 to 3+ years the loop is team-specific and decentralized. Typical: 30-min recruiter call; then a technical screen that can be a 1-hour CoderPad coding round, a 1-hour system design screen (Excalidraw), both back to back, or a take-home (Hello Interview: 48-hour window, about 6 hours, e.g. a webhook delivery service with retries, dead-letter queue and status API, built in your own setup, then extended live with an engineer). Onsite 4 to 6 hours: coding (own IDE with screen share or CoderPad), system design, a technical project walkthrough or presentation (interviewing.io lists a 45-min presentation with slides expected; a Feb 2026 LeetCode report had about 30 min of presenting inside a 60-min deep dive), behavioral with a senior manager, and a working-with-teams behavioral. interviewing.io reports a beta 'agentic coding' round where you work in an existing codebase with an AI coding agent. A Jan 2025 report for a 'junior level' role (2.7 YOE) said the final was 2 technical plus 1 behavioral. On the Oct 4, 2026 Ashby board, SWE postings that state a requirement mostly ask for 4+ years (most common 5 or 7); early-career exceptions exist (one Performance Modeling Engineer posting asks 1 to 2 years; the Applied Emerging Talent 2027 posting asks 0 to 1).
Online assessment¶
- Platform: HackerRank (asynchronous OA); live rounds on CoderPad
- Format: 2 coding questions. One Jan 2025 OA: 110 minutes, camera on, full-screen share required. Emerging Talent reports (Oct 2025): both DP. Topics named in an invite: DP, graphs, arrays.
- Notes: The OA appears mainly in the Emerging Talent (intern and new grad) funnel. Experienced candidates usually start with live screens or a take-home. Expect proctoring; practice HackerRank stdin/stdout input parsing.
Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.
Coding rounds¶
- Rounds: 1 live screen (60 min) plus 1 to 2 coding rounds in the final loop
- Style: Practical and multi-part (about four parts per question per interviewing.io), production-like components rather than trick puzzles: time-based key-value store, KV store serialization, resumable iterator, in-memory database with SQL-like operations, unix cd with symlinks, spreadsheet formulas with cycle detection, multithreaded web crawler. Candidates report typing for the whole hour. Some roles get math-flavored coding (KL divergence, cross entropy, expected iterations).
- Environment: CoderPad with code execution (can run tests) for live rounds; own IDE with screen share is allowed in some onsite coding rounds; HackerRank for the OA. AI tools are not allowed unless the round says so (the official guide says rules vary by interview; the agentic coding pilot is the exception).
- Graded on: Official guide: well-designed solutions, high-quality code, optimal performance and good test coverage, plus communication and collaboration. Hello Interview reports candidates hearing that a 2/4 or low 3/4 coding score can block an offer even if other rounds go well.
- Reported focus topics: Class and API design that survives new requirements (multi-part problems), Time-based and versioned key-value stores, Stateful iterators and generators, In-memory databases and SQL-like query handling, Serialization, encoding and parsing, Graphs: dependency resolution, cycle detection, BFS/DFS, Concurrency: threads, coroutines, worker pools, Dynamic programming (Emerging Talent OA), Writing your own tests, System design: webhooks, queues and retries, CI/CD, chat, payments, LLM serving (experienced), Probability and information theory basics for some roles
Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.
What they ask (data)¶
Based on 5 distinct problems tagged to OpenAI in the last 6 months (2 in the last 30 days, 3 in the last 3 months, 18 all-time) across two open datasets of LeetCode company tags. Tags are user-reported, so treat frequency as a signal, not a promise.
Difficulty mix (last 6 months): Medium 100%
Most tagged topics (share of problems): Array 60%, Design 60%, Hash Table 40%, Simulation 20%, Breadth-First Search 20%, Matrix 20%, Linked List 20%, Doubly-Linked List 20%, String 20%, Bit Manipulation 20%
Watch out: OpenAI has thin LeetCode data. Weight the reported questions and the format notes above more than this list.
Most frequent problems¶
Ranked by frequency, weighted toward the last 30 days. Classics like Two Sum sit near the top of almost every company's list because users tag them everywhere. Solve those fast. The signature list below is more specific to this company.
| # | Problem | Difficulty | Last seen | Topics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Design Memory Allocator | Medium | 30 days | Array, Hash Table, Design, Simulation |
| 2 | Rotting Oranges | Medium | 30 days | Array, Breadth-First Search, Matrix |
| 3 | Design Authentication Manager | Medium | 3 months | Hash Table, Linked List, Design, Doubly-Linked List |
| 4 | IP to CIDR | Medium | 6 months | String, Bit Manipulation |
| 5 | Design Hit Counter | Medium | 6 months | Array, Binary Search, Design, Queue |
Signature problems¶
Problems where OpenAI accounts for a large share of all recent tags across companies. These are the most OpenAI-specific questions in the data.
| # | Problem | Difficulty | Last seen | Topics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Design Memory Allocator | Medium | 30 days | Array, Hash Table, Design, Simulation |

Beyond LeetCode¶
Project walkthrough or technical presentation (2024 interns had a project walkthrough round; experienced loops expect 30 to 45 minutes of slides plus Q&A). Take-home with live extension (48-hour window, about 6 hours, webhook delivery service). Agentic coding round (beta): existing codebase plus an AI coding agent. Practical component builds instead of puzzles. For Applied Emerging Talent roles the job is product engineering (React, Python, Postgres), so shipped full-stack work is directly relevant.
System design¶
Not part of the reported 2025 new grad loop (coding plus behavioral). For 1 to 3+ years, expect 1 to 2 system design rounds (one can be a phone screen) in Excalidraw, with heavy drilling into how components work internally (queues, caches, load balancers, database internals, sometimes GPU and model serving). Reported prompts: webhook delivery platform with 24-hour retries, Slack MVP in two weeks, CI/CD like GitHub Actions, payment system, online chess, ChatGPT, notifications system. interviewing.io advises not to name-drop technologies you cannot explain in depth.
Start with who needs system design, then the framework.
Behavioral¶
Framework: OpenAI values (Humanity first; Act with humility; Feel the AGI; Ship joy) and operating principles (Find a way; Creativity over control; Update quickly; Intense focus), plus the OpenAI Charter. (official page)
What they look for:
- Official: collaboration, effective communication, openness to feedback, and alignment with the mission and values
- Official: high potential, meaning you ramp up quickly in a new domain and produce results; not credential-driven
- Ownership beyond your defined role
- Cross-functional work with researchers, product and safety teams
- A considered view on AI safety and ethics
Questions to prepare:
- Why OpenAI?
- Tell me about a conflict and how you resolved it.
- Tell me about a time you did something outside your defined responsibilities.
- Describe a time you failed and how you handled it.
- Tell me about a time you had to influence a peer who disagreed with you.
- Tell me about a time you had to consider AI safety implications.
- If you were deciding whether to release a new AI model, what criteria would you use?
- Walk me through a past project: your decisions versus the team's, tradeoffs, and what you would change.
Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.
Tips¶
- Practice building one component per hour in your interview language with no AI: time-based KV store, in-memory DB with WHERE/ORDER BY/DELETE, resumable iterator, spreadsheet with cycle detection. Get a working version, then extend it.
- Write tests as you code. The official guide grades design, code quality, performance and test coverage together.
- Read every line of the prompt before coding. One 2025 candidate burned time optimizing when the instructions said performance did not matter.
- For the Emerging Talent OA, drill DP and graph problems in HackerRank format with stdin parsing, camera on and screen shared.
- Go to OpenAI campus events and join the Emerging Talent Community: a 2024 intern applied with a priority link from a campus event.
- Prepare one project for an in-depth walkthrough: what you did versus the team, the architecture, a key request path, tradeoffs and numbers.
- Read the OpenAI Charter and recent blog posts for your target team; have a specific 'why OpenAI' and a view on AI safety.
- The 2027 Applied Emerging Talent posting asks for React, Python and Postgres. A shipped full-stack project with real users matches that job better than extra LeetCode volume.
4-week plan for OpenAI¶
Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.
- Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
- Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
- Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
- Week 4: Write 8 stories for the OpenAI values (Humanity first; Act with humility; Feel the AGI; Ship joy) and operating principles (Find a way; Creativity over control; Update quickly; Intense focus), plus the OpenAI Charter. round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: Re-verified Oct 4, 2026 by an adversarial fact-check pass [VERIFIED]: openai.com interview guide, careers (values and operating principles), Emerging Talent (0 to 3 years text), Residency (2026 applications closed), Student Collective and Charter loaded in a real browser (curl and WebFetch get 403); the Applied Emerging Talent 2027 posting ($180K, 0 to 1 years, JavaScript/React/Python/Postgres, published Sep 14, 2026) confirmed via Ashby's public posting API; Levels.fyi L2/L3/intern figures and the individual L2 samples parsed from the pages; all LeetCode Discuss posts fetched via LeetCode GraphQL and all LeetCode problem slugs confirmed real; Reddit posts and comments via the Arctic Shift archive; IGotAnOffer (updated May 4, 2026) via browser; liquidslr repo (31K stars, last data update Aug 16, 2026) via GitHub API. Corrections made in this pass: the candidate-portal process is from the 2026 new grad cycle (Oct 2025), not 2025; the LeetCode-tag entries are from liquidslr data updated Aug 16, 2026, not Jun 2025; Hello Interview's blog is titled 'OpenAI Coding Interviews 2025' with no visible month, so its questions are dated 2025; the '2/4 or low 3/4' coding-score quote is in the Hello Interview blog, not the L4 guide. Uncertain: (1) OpenAI's process is decentralized and changes by team; the new grad loop shape rests on one candidate portal description (Oct 2025) plus 2024 intern reports. (2) OA details rest on a handful of posts and comments. (3) Levels.fyi samples are small (13 at L2, 14 at L3). (4) The agentic coding round is a beta per interviewing.io. (5) Hello Interview and interviewing.io guides target experienced hires. (6) The OpenAI Residency is a 6-month salaried program, 2026 applications closed, not a new grad role. (7) The OpenAI Student Collective (Jugal's Aug 2026 post) is a paid campus-lead community role for undergraduates (US/Canada/India Fall 2026 cohort closed), not an engineering internship. (8) Several LeetCode problems linked here are Premium-only: Design Excel Sum Formula, Encode and Decode Strings, Web Crawler Multithreaded. The Feb 2026 LeetCode post (7572435) links a paid question site; r/InterviewCoderHQ, r/Hack2Hire and r/OfferEngineering promote paid tools and were not used. The Nov 2024 new grad phone screen (balance at timestamp) predates 2025 and is used only as context.
