Intern interviews by company

For students with an online assessment (OA) or intern interview coming up. You leave knowing the format at your target companies, how intern loops differ from new grad loops, and what to do each week for 6 weeks.

How intern loops differ from new grad loops

Intern New grad
Rounds after the OA 1 to 3 coding interviews 3 to 5 rounds
Problem level Mostly LeetCode easy to medium, fundamentals first Medium to hard, more follow-ups
System design Rare. Meta does not ask interns system design (reported) Sometimes light design or object-oriented design
Behavioral Light, a few minutes per round. Amazon is the exception: Leadership Principles are scored at every level Usually a dedicated round
AI-enabled coding Not confirmed for intern loops at Meta or Google Meta new grad loops can include an AI-enabled round since Oct 2025 (Hello Interview)
Amazon OA Official: about 90 minutes, no Work Simulation. 2026 reports: 1 coding problem plus 1 AI-assisted repository debugging task Official: adds a Work Simulation of about 60 minutes (Amazon)
What they judge Fundamentals, clean working code, communication, learning potential Same, plus more depth and ownership
After you pass Team or host matching at many companies Team matching at many companies

Format by company (as of Oct 2026)

"Official" means the company's own page or posting says it. "Reported" means recent candidate reports collected in the company guides. Reported formats vary by year, region and team, so ask your recruiter to confirm.

OA platforms and scoring in more detail: OA formats by company, platforms.

The four big loops in detail

Amazon

  1. Read the official Amazon SDE OA prep page and take its free, unscored two-question practice test.
  2. Work through Amazon's free SDE Intern OA and Interview Prep Course. It covers the OA, the Leadership Principles and technical topics.
  3. Block 2 quiet hours with a webcam ready. The OA tests coding, problem solving and the Leadership Principles.
  4. Practice the 2026 format too: fix bugs in a small web app (Node, Spring Boot or Django) with an AI assistant, then make the tests pass. Candidates report this task alongside one DSA problem.
  5. Know the rules: public online resources are allowed, copying and pasting is not advised, and pressing print screen locks you out. Finish the feedback survey, or your results can be delayed.
  6. Answer Workstyles honestly and consistently with the Leadership Principles.
  7. Prepare 4 to 6 short STAR stories, each mapped to 2 or 3 principles. Use Amazon Leadership Principles and Jugal's 6-week Amazon roadmap.

Google

  1. Read Google: how we hire and Google interview tips. The process takes roughly 6 to 8 weeks, and the US BS intern posting said hearing back can take 90+ days.
  2. Expect the Google Hiring Assessment (a workstyle questionnaire) and possibly a coding exercise.
  3. Practice coding in a plain Google Doc: no autocomplete, no running code. Write your own test cases out loud.
  4. Prepare for 2 interviews of about 45 minutes. Ask about inputs and edge cases before you code.
  5. Do not use AI tools in the interview. Google's hiring page says they are not permitted.
  6. After you pass, fill the preference questionnaire and take host matching calls with teams. Ask each host what your project would be and how they measure success.

Meta

  1. Read Meta's own intern interview post. The two interviews have identical expectations.
  2. You get 30 to 35 minutes of coding for 1 or 2 questions. Practice solving a medium in 15 to 20 minutes while talking the whole time.
  3. Use your strongest language. Practice in CoderPad or any plain editor.
  4. Drill Meta-tagged problems from the Meta guide in the last 2 weeks.
  5. Prepare for Meta's behavioral signals with Meta behavioral. Jugal's Meta and Amazon guide covers both loops.

Microsoft

  1. Read the Microsoft university internship FAQ and student interviewing tips. Interviews are virtual. Allow up to 90 days for a decision.
  2. Expect two technical rounds, often the same day. Round 2 often covers one of your projects, so prepare one you can explain in depth, including design choices.
  3. Prepare 3 growth-mindset stories: a time you learned fast, a time you changed your mind, a time you got hard feedback. See Microsoft behavioral.
  4. Holding another offer? Tell your recruiter early. Microsoft states it cannot expedite review for competing offer deadlines.

Quant and trading internships

  • Jane Street's official guides: interviewing, preparing for a SWE interview, and a mock interview video. How to use them: watch the mock once before your first round and copy how the candidate thinks out loud. You are considered for every open role, so apply once.
  • Jugal's How to break into $300K+ HFT roles: the four role types (SWE, quant researcher, quant trader, infrastructure), 10 LeetCode problems (9 of them hard, such as LFU Cache and Sliding Window Maximum), and a low-latency system design section. How to use it: pick your role bucket first, then solve all 10 problems under a 45-minute timer.
  • Quant applications open as early as June to August and many close by September to October, per the same post. This cycle, Optiver and IMC posted on Jul 1, 2026 and HRT on Jul 13.

AI rules in 2026

Company What it says What you do
Google Official hiring page: AI tools are not permitted during interviews Practice without any assistant
Meta New grad loops can include an AI-enabled coding round since Oct 2025, and the recruiter tells you which round is which. Not confirmed for interns Ask your recruiter which format you will get
Amazon The Summer 2027 SDE intern posting lists experience with AI-assisted development tools as a basic qualification. 2026 OAs include an AI-assisted repository task (reported) Put the AI tools you really used on your resume, and what you verified in their output
Microsoft The CoreAI intern posting lists experience with GitHub Copilot, Claude Code and Roo Code as preferred Be ready to discuss their strengths and limits
Salesforce The US Summer 2027 posting lists AI-assisted development and reviewing LLM-generated code as pluses Prepare one example of catching a bug in generated code
Atlassian Some 2026 intern loops used a 1-hour AI-assisted coding interview, such as fixing a bug in a small web app with an AI agent (reported) Practice debugging unfamiliar code with an assistant
HRT, Two Sigma, Snowflake, Waymo AI tools prohibited in assessments Do the OA yourself
Pinterest, Anthropic No AI in interviews or assessments unless the instructions or interviewer say so Ask before you open any assistant

Rule for every company: assume no AI unless the recruiter tells you in writing that it is allowed. Never use a live "interview copilot". It is cheating, and firms like HRT say they disqualify candidates or rescind offers for it.

How to practice for AI-assisted rounds, from Jugal's FAANG AI internship prep post:

  1. Solve problems with an assistant, then say out loud what you asked for and why.
  2. Find the bug in generated code before you run it.
  3. Practice reading and debugging code you did not write.
  4. Be ready to defend every design decision in your own projects.

Six-week intern prep plan

Budget 1.5 to 2 hours a day, 6 days a week. Jugal cleared Amazon, Google and Meta with 120 LeetCode problems by learning patterns instead of chasing volume (120 problems post). For an intern loop, aim for 60 to 80 problems you understand well.

Week Topics Do this
1 Arrays, hashing, two pointers, sliding window 15 problems from Grind 75 or NeetCode 150. Learn each pattern from patterns
2 Stacks, binary search, linked lists 15 problems. Re-solve any problem that took over 30 minutes after 3 days
3 Trees, BFS, DFS, basic graphs 15 problems. Write BFS and DFS from memory twice
4 Heaps, intervals, recursion and backtracking, basic dynamic programming 15 problems. Say time and space complexity for every solution
5 Timed online assessments 2 full timed OAs in your target's format (CodeSignal 4 questions in 70 minutes, or HackerRank 2 to 3 in 90). Amazon applicants: take the official practice test. Use OA strategy
6 Mocks, behavioral, company problems 3 to 4 mock interviews (mock interviews). 4 to 6 STAR stories. The top 20 problems from each target's company guide

How to work each problem: how to practice. Which list to use: problem lists.

What interviewers grade at the intern level

  • You restate the problem and ask 2 or 3 clarifying questions before coding.
  • You walk through one example by hand.
  • You say your approach and its complexity before writing code.
  • You write working code in a real language with clear names. See code quality.
  • You test your code by tracing an example and an edge case, without being asked.
  • You talk the whole time and take hints well.
  • You finish. A correct brute force that you then improve beats an unfinished optimal idea.

The full 45-minute structure: interview framework.

Behavioral answers for interns

Projects, classes, clubs, hackathons and part-time jobs all count as material. You do not need work experience.

  1. Write one 60-second "tell me about yourself": year and major, one project with a number, why this company.
  2. Write 4 to 6 STAR stories: a project you built, a hard bug, a team disagreement, learning something fast, a mistake you fixed, feedback you acted on.
  3. Use "I", not "we". Say what you did.
  4. Map each story to Amazon's principles if Amazon is on your list.
  5. Build the full bank with story bank and behavioral basics. Jugal's behavioral prep post has a story-first framework.
"Walk me through a project" (90 seconds)

Problem: [who had the problem and why it mattered]
What I built: [one sentence, the main components]
My part: [what I personally designed or wrote]
Hard part: [one technical decision and the trade-off you made]
Result: [one number: users, latency, accuracy, time saved]
Next: [what you would change with more time]

After the interview: matching and timelines

Company What happens after you pass How long
Google Preference questionnaire, then host matching calls with teams Roughly 6 to 8 weeks for the process (official). Hearing back can take 90+ days
Microsoft The final round assesses you for a specific role in an organization Up to 90 days (official)
Jane Street Weeks before the internship, an engineer runs a call on your preferences and pairs you with a project Feedback within about a week of the final (official)
Two Sigma Matched to a team 2 to 3 months before start (posting) About 7 weeks end to end in one 2025 report
Citadel Team matching happens inside the process About 8 weeks from first round to decision (official)
Pinterest Hiring committee review You hear back by the end of the season (official)
Roblox You rank team preferences and are matched a few weeks before day one Reported
All industries NACE: average 27 days from interview to offer, and students take 9 days to respond NACE 2026

Deadlines and competing offers

  1. Get every offer and its deadline in writing.
  2. Tell the other companies you are interviewing with that you have a deadline, and ask if they can move faster. Some cannot (Microsoft says so).
  3. Ask the offering company for an extension, politely, with a specific date (template below).
  4. Do not accept one offer while planning to back out for another. Ask for an extension instead.
  5. Compare offers with comp basics. Scripts for extensions and exploding offers: negotiation scripts.
