Quant investment manager run on data and distributed systems. Expect hard LeetCode-style OAs, three 60-minute codepair interviews, then project discussions. Updated October 2026.
| Two Sigma at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Category | Finance and quant |
| Intern level | Software Engineering Internship (Summer 2027): 10 weeks, NYC (Soho) office, one project with an assigned mentor, ends in a final presentation. |
| New grad level | Software Engineering Full-Time Campus Hire (NYC or Houston), hired into a general SWE role. Levels.fyi maps entry level to L1. |
| 0 to 3 years | Software Engineer. Two Sigma does not publish its ladder; Levels.fyi tracks L1 to L6 and reports L1 as entry level (typically 0 to 1 yrs experience) and L2 as typically 3 to 4 yrs, so 0 to 3 yrs maps to L1 or early L2. |
| Online assessment | HackerRank : Usually 2 coding problems (LeetCode medium to hard). Duration: a May 2024 Taro intern report describes 'a 90-minute technical assessment'; no 2025 report states the OA length. 2025 variants: 2 mediums (Aug 2025); 1 hard + 1 medium (Mar 2025 Houston); a company-specific decoding task rated medium where the candidate ran out of time (Nov 2025). A Feb 2025 intern solved 1 of 2 and still reached three technical rounds. |
| Coding rounds | Official: up to 3 interview rounds; the technical half is three 60-min codepair interviews (new grad). Reports: 1 screen + 2 to 3 technical interviews (2025), sometimes a 45-min and a 90-min technical round. Interns: 1 to 3 technical interviews. |
| Behavioral | No named framework. Project and experience interviews in the second half of the final; short behavioral segment in screens. |
| Timeline | Slow. One 2025 intern waited about 5 weeks for the OA and 2 more weeks for the interview (about 7 weeks total), with a reschedule the day before. Hiring committee then management committee for some full-time loops. New grads are team-matched 2 to 3 months before start. SWE intern and campus postings were live by early October 2026. |
| New grad pay | Official (Two Sigma postings, Oct 4, 2026): NYC Software Engineering Full-Time Campus Hire base $225,000 plus discretionary bonus ('can be a significant portion of total compensation'). Summer 2027 SWE intern: $3,800/week (Bachelors), $3,900/week (Masters), $4,200/week (PhD). Levels.fyi (US, updated Oct 4, 2026, 296 SWE submissions): L1 median total comp $247K (base $174K, bonus $68.7K, stock about $4.4K); overall SWE median $398K; range $247K (L1) to $730K (L6). |

Interview process¶
New grad¶
- Application. Apply on careers.twosigma.com (Avature portal). Campus SWE roles posted for NYC and Houston (Oct 4, 2026). Hired into a general Software Engineering role and 'matched to a specific team 2-3 months before you start' (official posting).
- Online assessment. HackerRank. Reports vary: about 2 LeetCode mediums (Aug 2025 intern, Panama applicant); 1 LeetCode hard + 1 medium (Mar 2025 Houston); a 'standard medium difficulty' HackerRank with a company-specific string-decoding task (Nov 2025 NY). The official guide does not describe the OA, so treat it as standard but variable.
- Phone / video screen. About 40 to 60 min in a shared codepair editor. Mar 2025 NY report: 40 min total, the first 15 min behavioral ('Why Two Sigma?'), then one LeetCode medium with a follow-up, last 5 min Q&A. Official: if the fit is not there after a few interviews, your slot may end early.
- Technical interviews (first half of final). Official: up to 3 interview rounds in total; the first half is 'three 60 minute interviews' in a 'shared codepair environment', languages C, C++, Java, or Python. Topics: data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design patterns, big O, tree/graph traversal, recursion, searching/sorting, hash tables, concurrency, possibly a systems-design exercise. Reports: an OOP design round (Connect-7 game, Mar 2025 Houston), a tree-focused algorithm round, hard DP. Sep 2025 NY new grad with offer: after the OA, a 45-min technical round (1 LeetCode hard) and a 90-min technical round (2 LeetCode hards); 'they don't give hints or suggestions'. May 2025 Houston offer: phone screen, then two back-to-back technical interviews.
- Second half of final. Official: additional meetings of about 60 min on 'specific projects and contributions you've made in previous roles', experience and interests. May 2025 Houston offer: three one-hour behavioral interviews. Sep 2025 NY new grad offer: about 3 hours of behavioral/knowledge sessions.
- Committee review. Hiring committee, then a management committee (May 2025 Houston offer report). Not described on the official page.
Intern¶
- Application. Summer 2027 SWE internship live on careers.twosigma.com on Oct 4, 2026 (NYC only).
- Online assessment. HackerRank, usually 2 problems (LeetCode medium to hard). One Jan 2025 applicant waited about 5 weeks for the OA.
- Technical interviews (1 to 3). 60 min live coding in a company codepair IDE. Reported: Word Search II (Jan 2025), encode and decode a Huffman tree (Aug 2025), 'a heinous DP problem' in round 3 (Feb 2025). Many candidates stop after round 1.
- First-year program track. A Feb 2025 first-year internship candidate had one video interview with a non-LeetCode task: debug a binary tree.
- Offer and team match. Matched to a team 2 to 3 months before start (official posting). Whole process about 7 weeks in one 2025 report.
With 1 to 3 years of experience¶
Same structure (screen, three 60-min technical rounds, then project and experience interviews), with heavier weight on design/architecture and on past projects. The official guide grades 'design/architecture' and may include a systems-design exercise. A Houston 2025 SWE loop added three one-hour behavioral interviews plus hiring and management committees. Expect concurrency questions for systems roles.
Online assessment¶
- Platform: HackerRank
- Format: Usually 2 coding problems (LeetCode medium to hard).
- Notes: The official guide does not describe the OA, so format can change. Official: 'Use of ChatGPT or any other AI tool is strictly prohibited' and can lead to disqualification. Hints: the official guide says interviewers are 'happy to give you hints', but a Sep 2025 new grad with an offer said live interviewers gave no hints or suggestions.
Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.
Coding rounds¶
- Rounds: Official: up to 3 interview rounds; the technical half is three 60-min codepair interviews (new grad). Reports: 1 screen + 2 to 3 technical interviews (2025), sometimes a 45-min and a 90-min technical round. Interns: 1 to 3 technical interviews.
- Style: LeetCode medium to hard, plus company-specific tasks (string decoding, Huffman encode/decode, game OOP). Graphs and trees come up often ('they love those', May 2025). Some first-year rounds are debugging, not LeetCode.
- Environment: Shared codepair environment with the interviewer (official). Languages: C, C++, Java, or Python (official).
- Graded on: Official: 'coding ability, computer science knowledge, testing, design/architecture, and general problem solving ability', with clean, scalable code; consider memory and performance beyond brute force; accept hints.
- Reported focus topics: Graphs (BFS, DFS, union-find, topological sort), Trees and tries (Word Search II style), Dynamic programming at LeetCode-hard level, Hash tables, sorting, searching, recursion, big O (official list), Concurrency basics (official list), Object-oriented design of games and small systems, Encoding and decoding (Huffman, custom string codecs), Testing your own code
Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.
What they ask (data)¶
Based on 5 distinct problems tagged to Two Sigma in the last 6 months (0 in the last 30 days, 0 in the last 3 months, 19 all-time) across two open datasets of LeetCode company tags. Tags are user-reported, so treat frequency as a signal, not a promise.
Difficulty mix (last 6 months): Medium 60%, Hard 20%, Easy 20%
Most tagged topics (share of problems): Math 40%, String 40%, Array 40%, Dynamic Programming 40%, Simulation 20%, Graph Theory 20%, Topological Sort 20%, Directed Acyclic Graph 20%, Binary Search 20%, Prefix Sum 20%
Watch out: Two Sigma has thin LeetCode data. Weight the reported questions and the format notes above more than this list.
Most frequent problems¶
Ranked by frequency, weighted toward the last 30 days. Classics like Two Sum sit near the top of almost every company's list because users tag them everywhere. Solve those fast. The signature list below is more specific to this company.
| # | Problem | Difficulty | Last seen | Topics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Multiply Strings | Medium | 6 months | Math, String, Simulation |
| 2 | Parallel Courses III | Hard | 6 months | Array, Dynamic Programming, Graph Theory, Topological Sort |

Beyond LeetCode¶
OOP game design (Connect-7, Mar 2025), encode and decode a Huffman tree (Aug 2025), decode a string from a custom encoding algorithm (Nov 2025), debug a binary tree (first-year program, Feb 2025), project discussions. Quant research roles have separate math and statistics interviews (not covered here).
System design¶
Can appear for new grads as an object-oriented design or systems-design exercise inside the technical rounds (official: 'may be asked to take part in a systems-design exercise'; Mar 2025 Houston: first round was 'System Design, primarily object-oriented programming', Design a Connect-7 game). Heavier HLD for experienced hires.
Start with who needs system design, then the framework.
Behavioral¶
Framework: No named framework. Project and experience interviews in the second half of the final; short behavioral segment in screens. (official page)
What they look for:
- Rigorous, collaborative, scientific approach (official posting)
- Curiosity and insight balanced with pragmatism and practicality (official posting)
- Passion for data and building quality software (official posting)
- Clear explanation of your own projects and contributions (official interview guide)
- Clarifying questions before coding, openness to hints (official interview guide)
Questions to prepare:
- Why are you interested in working at Two Sigma? (SWE screen, Mar 2025)
- Please introduce yourself and your background (SWE intern, Jan 2025)
- Walk through a specific project and your individual contribution (official guide theme)
Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.
Tips¶
- Read the official guide (https://www.twosigma.com/interviewing-for-software-engineering/) and watch its 'Software Engineering Interview Demo' video. Pick one of its four languages: C, C++, Java, or Python.
- Train for LeetCode hards under time. 2025 reports include an OA with 1 hard + 1 medium (Houston) and a new grad loop with a 45-min round (1 hard) and a 90-min round (2 hards).
- Drill graphs and trees first; a 2025 offer holder said 'they love those'. Do Word Search II (https://leetcode.com/problems/word-search-ii/).
- Practice one OOP game design (Connect Four style board, win detection, extensible rules) and one encode/decode problem (Huffman) before the onsite.
- Test out loud. 'Testing' is one of five official grading areas; walk through edge cases before the interviewer asks.
- Prepare 2 to 3 project stories with your own contribution, design choices and trade-offs for the second-half interviews.
- Do not use AI tools. Official: 'Use of ChatGPT or any other AI tool is strictly prohibited' and can lead to disqualification.
- Use the official reading list if you want books: Cracking the Coding Interview, Elements of Programming Interviews in Python, The Algorithm Design Manual (all named on the official guide).
- Expect weeks between stages; keep other processes moving and tell your recruiter about deadlines.
4-week plan for Two Sigma¶
Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.
- Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
- Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
- Week 3: Solve problems 41 to 50 and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
- Week 4: Write 8 stories for the No named framework. Project and experience interviews in the second half of the final; short behavioral segment in screens. round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: Fact-checked 2026-10-04: every URL in sources and reported_questions re-fetched (official pages and careers.twosigma.com postings via HTTP; Taro pages read from server-rendered HTML; LeetCode problem slugs confirmed through LeetCode's GraphQL API; LeetCode pages return 403 to scripts but the slugs are real). Correction made: an earlier draft read the Sep 2025 new grad report as two OA tests (45 min + 90 min); the report lists those as technical interviews after the OA, followed by about 3 hours of behavioral/knowledge sessions. 'No hints' applies to that candidate's live interviews, not to the OA, and conflicts with the official guide's promise of hints. Two Sigma data is thinner than for other quant firms: LeetCode Discuss has 18 Two Sigma-tagged posts and the only 2025 to 2026 one (Feb 2026) is a question with no content, so 2025 Taro reports carry most of the weight. 2026 reports are essentially absent. OA format varies between reports. The official guide does not mention an OA or committees; those come from candidates. The '26 days to hire' figure from a Glassdoor search snippet is UNVERIFIED and excluded. Two Sigma has no public values page; values_url points to About Us. The twosigma.com internships page lists only AI Research Scientist and Quantitative Researcher under '2027 Internship Roles', but the SWE Summer 2027 internship is live on careers.twosigma.com (also listed as Internships & Early Careers). Houston campus-hire posting shows no pay range. Jugal's HFT post is cited only for general quant recruiting timing; it does not cover Two Sigma specifically. No verified data on Two Sigma visa sponsorship.
