Offer negotiation resources¶
Articles, books, data sites and communities for offer negotiation, each with what to do with it. Free first. Paid ones are marked.
Watch out: Several classic sources are old: Haseeb Qureshi (2016), Patrick McKenzie (2012), the Google ex-recruiter piece (2020), and Tech Interview Handbook's comp numbers (2021). The principles hold. Never quote their dollar figures as current.
Read these first (about 90 minutes)¶
- Read Ten Rules for Negotiating a Job Offer by Haseeb Qureshi (2016). Write the ten rules on one index card and keep it next to you on every recruiter call.
- Read How Not to Bomb Your Offer Negotiation, his part 2, the night before your offer call. Note the closing move and when to use it.
- Read the "never give a number first" part of Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued by Patrick McKenzie (2012) before your first recruiter screen.
- Read Exactly what to say when recruiters ask you to name the first number by Aline Lerner. Practice the deflection out loud twice.
- Read the Compensation Breakdown and How to Negotiate chapters on Hello Interview. Mark which components their table says are hard to move.
- Open the Levels.fyi page for each company you are interviewing with (for example Google). Copy the level, median, and vesting schedule into your tracker.
Then use this site's process, comp basics and scripts.
