How internship recruiting works¶
For students targeting a big tech internship in Summer 2027 or Summer 2028. You leave with a dated calendar, this week's to-do list, and a return-offer plan.
Five facts that decide your season¶
All numbers are from the Summer 2027 cycle, measured on Oct 4, 2026 from the SimplifyJobs Summer 2027 list and official postings.
| Fact | Evidence | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Big tech hires interns 9 to 12 months ahead | New Summer 2027 listings: 143 in July 2026, 994 in August, 2,018 in September | Your resume must be ready by July of the year before the internship |
| Review is rolling | 39.7% of all Summer 2027 listings were closed by Oct 4, 2026, including 48% of those posted in August | The posted deadline is not the real one. Apply in the first week a role appears |
| Some windows last days | Google's US SWE intern "early consideration" window ran Jul 20 to 24, 2026. Microsoft SWE intern postings take applications in the first week of each month | Set alerts. Keep a transcript PDF ready so you can apply the same day |
| Intern loops test fundamentals | Usually an online assessment plus 1 to 3 coding interviews, rarely system design | Data structures, algorithms and clean code matter most. See intern interviews |
| Internships feed new grad hiring | NACE: 63.1% of 2024 to 2025 interns converted to full time, across all industries (NACE 2026 survey) | Treat the internship as a 12-week interview. Playbook below |
Jugal's illustration of rolling review, from his 494 Summer 2027 internships post: a company reviews 200 applications a week and fills its interview slots in three weeks. A week-one application competes with 200 people. The same application in week five competes with everyone who came before it, for whatever slots are left.
Watch out: Jugal's Aug 20, 2026 post had 66 direct posting links. By Oct 4, at least 13 were closed or gone. Use the live lists in finding and applying, not old link dumps.
Do this week (Oct 4 to 10, 2026)¶
- Open the SimplifyJobs Summer 2027 list. On Oct 4 it had 1,854 open roles (SWE 617, Data Science/AI/ML 675, Hardware 315, PM 149, Quant 98). Apply to every matching role posted in the last 14 days.
- Apply to Microsoft by Oct 7 (next window: Nov 1 to 7). Pick the 1 or 2 Summer 2027 SWE intern tracks that match your projects: Fullstack, Cloud and Distributed Backend, AI/ML and LLM, Data Platform, Security and Identity, CoreAI (CoreAI is rolling, September to April).
- Second-year students: apply to Microsoft Explore (second year) in the same Oct 1 to 7 window. Details on programs.
- Apply to the Amazon SDE Intern, Summer 2027 (USA). One application covers every US intern location. It accepts degree dates from October 2027 to September 2029, so sophomores qualify.
- Enrolled at a university in Europe, the UK or the Middle East? Apply to the matching Google EMEA SWE/SRE intern posting before Oct 23, 2026: London, Zurich, Munich, Paris, Dublin, Stockholm, Warsaw, Krakow, Bucharest. None of them sponsor visas.
- EMEA bachelor's or master's students who have shipped AI projects (RAG, vector databases, cloud): the Google Forward Deployed Engineering Intern, London opens Oct 5 and closes Nov 13, 2026.
- Have US, UK or Canada work authorization and want AI research? Apply to the Anthropic Fellows Program by Oct 18, 2026 for the January cohort.
- Turn on three alerts: SWEList emails, a LinkedIn saved search for software engineer intern 2027, and a Google Careers intern alert.
- Watch for Meta. Its Summer 2027 SWE intern posting was not live on Oct 4, 2026. Apply within 48 hours of it appearing.
- Final-year students who can still intern: also open the Simplify New Grad list and run both searches in parallel.
Summer 2027 calendar, month by month¶

Use the calendar for Summer 2028¶
First and second years: your target is Summer 2028. Shift every row above by 12 months and be ready 2 weeks before each date. Windows are moving earlier: Google's Summer 2026 US SWE intern posting went live in mid-October 2025 (per Extern, cited in Jugal's 494 post), and the Summer 2027 one went live in July 2026.
- Jan to Mar 2027: build one project with real users or a measurable result. See zero experience and Jugal's AI internship prep post for what to build.
- Jan to Mar 2027: land one merged open source pull request.
- Feb to Mar 2027: apply to Outreachy (February), GSoC (March) or a research program for Summer 2027. See programs.
- Apr to Jun 2027: watch quant firms. SIG posted on Apr 9 this cycle and Optiver on Jul 1. Jugal: quant applications open June to August and many close by September to October (Breaking into HFT, new grad HFT guide).
- India: Apr 2027 Goldman Sachs India Hackathon, May HackOn With Amazon, Jun Flipkart GRiD, Sep Amazon ML Challenge.
- Jun 15, 2027: one-page resume final, reviewed by 2 people. Use resume rules.
- Jul 1, 2027: resume PDF, English transcript PDF, GitHub and LinkedIn links in one folder.
- Jul 2027: check Google Careers weekly for an early-consideration window.
- Aug to Sep 2027: apply daily. This is the peak.
- First week of every month from Aug 2027 to Feb 2028: check Microsoft postings.
- Oct 2027 onward: Meta, startups and late movers.
- Nov 2027 to Feb 2028: OAs, screens, final rounds.
Tip: Put the Summer 2028 dates in your calendar today, each with a reminder 2 weeks before. Missing a 4-day window costs you a year.
What to apply to in each year of school¶
| Where you are (Oct 2026) | Apply to | Read |
|---|---|---|
| High school senior | Amazon Future Engineer scholarship and internship (US, financial need). Microsoft Discovery (rising first-years, 4 weeks). Jane Street WiSE and AMP | Programs |
| First year | Microsoft Explore (first-year posting, when it opens), Jane Street FTTP, FOCUS and Bridge, Inside HRT, Year at Palantir, general SWE postings open to all years, campus research, open source programs | Programs |
| Second year | Microsoft Explore (second year), Capital One Early Internship (Analyst track), NVIDIA Ignite (watch), Discover Citadel (if you graduate Dec 2027 to Jun 2029), HRT WiTTI (winter), Visa Sophomore program (next September), Amazon and Google SWE intern postings | Programs, finding and applying |
| Penultimate year (junior, or first year of a 2-year master's) | The main SWE, AI/ML and quant intern postings. Most of them prefer you | Finding and applying |
| Final year, returning to school after summer | Same postings, if your graduation date fits. Amazon and Microsoft require at least one term left after the internship | Read the eligibility line of each posting |
| Master's student | Filter for "Master's" in the title first. Capital One and NVIDIA run separate advanced-degree tracks (Jugal's tip) | Finding and applying |
| PhD student | Research internships, Google Student Researcher, Jane Street Graduate Research Fellowship | Programs |
Off-cycle internships and co-ops¶
Fall, winter and spring roles run on a separate list. Use them if your school allows a semester off or runs co-op terms.
- Simplify Off-Season list: Fall 2026, Winter 2027 and Spring 2027 roles in the US, Canada and remote. 1,329 open on Oct 4, 2026. How to use it: apply here in parallel with summer roles.
- Amazon's US SDE intern application lets you add a Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 preference. It is not guaranteed. Tick it anyway.
- Stripe posted a "Software Engineer Intern, Summer or Winter" role on Sep 1, 2026.
- University of Waterloo co-op: four-month work terms through the WaterlooWorks board. How to use it: if you are choosing a school in Canada, co-op schools give you several internships before graduation.
International students: check work authorization first¶
F-1 students need CPT or pre-completion OPT for a US internship. Two rules matter in 2026.
- CPT narrowed in August 2026. SEVP Broadcast Messages 2608-01 and 2608-02 allow CPT only for training required of every student in your program.
- An elective internship course no longer qualifies. USC, the University of Washington and Brown changed their CPT policies in August and September 2026.
- The Sep 14, 2026 court order that paused the Duration of Status rule does not touch this CPT guidance.
- Both CPT and OPT need one full academic year of full-time enrollment first (8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)). Graduate programs that require immediate training are the exception.
- A summer internship after two full semesters usually meets this rule.
- A fall or winter co-op during your first year usually does not.
Steps:
- Email your DSO this week with the template below. Get the answer in writing.
- If your program requires practical training for everyone, plan on CPT. Do not start work before the CPT start date on your I-20 (Study in the States: CPT).
- If not, plan on pre-completion OPT. You can file up to 90 days before you complete one full academic year. The I-765 fee is $470 online (as of Oct 2026).
- Do the OPT math first. Full-time summer pre-completion OPT is deducted from your 12 months of post-completion OPT.
- Before you apply anywhere, filter out roles that need citizenship or do not sponsor. Steps in finding and applying.
- Enrolled outside the US (for example in India)? Apply to the company's offices in your country. A US internship needs a J-1 intern sponsor through BridgeUSA, so ask the company which sponsor it uses.
- Check your first paystub. F-1 students who are nonresident aliens are generally exempt from Social Security and Medicare tax on CPT and OPT wages (IRS). If they were withheld, ask payroll.
Subject: Summer 2027 internship: CPT or pre-completion OPT?
Hi [DSO name],
I am an F-1 student in [Program, e.g., M.S. Computer Science], SEVIS ID [N00...], started [Month Year].
I am interviewing for Summer 2027 software engineering internships (expected dates [May 26 to Aug 15, 2027]).
Given SEVP Broadcast Messages 2608-01 and 2608-02 (August 2026), could you confirm:
1. Does my program have a practical training requirement that applies to all students, so CPT is available?
2. If not, should I plan for full-time pre-completion OPT, and when is the earliest date I can request your recommendation?
3. How much of my 12 months of OPT would a [12]-week full-time summer use?
Thank you,
[Name]
[Student ID]
Everything else (OPT, STEM OPT, H-1B, how to answer sponsorship questions) is on international students.
Watch out: This is general information, not legal advice. Rules changed several times in 2025 and 2026. Confirm your situation with your DSO.
Return-offer playbook¶
Base rates: NACE measured 63.1% intern-to-full-time conversion across all industries for 2024 to 2025 interns. Levels.fyi internships shows a crowdsourced "56% of interns receive full-time offers" across all companies. Big tech does not publish its own rate.
The typical pattern varies by company: your manager scopes a project, you get a midpoint check-in, and a final evaluation feeds the return-offer decision. Offers usually arrive a few weeks before the internship ends (Simplify return-offer guide).
Before day 1¶
- Ask your recruiter for your team name and manager. Read the team's public docs, blog posts or open source repos.
- Create three things: a notes doc, a daily log file, and a 15-minute end-of-day calendar block to update the log.
- F-1: confirm your CPT dates on the I-20 or your OPT EAD dates cover your exact start and end dates.
Week 1¶
- Ask your manager: "What does a strong intern outcome look like by my final week?" Write the answer at the top of your log.
- Ask who your mentor or buddy is, and how they prefer questions (chat, doc, scheduled time).
- Book a recurring 1:1 with your manager (weekly or every two weeks).
- Get your build running and ship one tiny change (a test, a doc fix) to learn the review process.
Weeks 2 to 5¶
- Write a one-page design note for your project before writing most of the code. Get your mentor's comments on it.
- Ask for help after 30 to 60 minutes of being stuck, with what you tried. Not after 5 minutes, not after 2 days.
- Send a short weekly update every Friday (template below).
- Log what you shipped, decisions you made, and feedback you got. You will reuse it for your final review and your resume.
Midpoint (around week 6)¶
- Have a working end-to-end slice, even if rough. Polish comes after.
- Ask for explicit feedback with the midpoint template below.
- Ask: "What does the return-offer decision depend on, and when is it made?"
- Fix the one thing your manager names, and mention the fix in your next update.
Weeks 7 to 10¶
- Meet 5 to 10 people outside your team for 20-minute chats. Visibility helps (Simplify).
- Write tests and docs for your project so someone else can run it after you leave.
- Join team events and any intern hackathon.
- In the last 3 weeks, ask your manager directly about the conversion timeline.
Final 2 weeks¶
- Present your project to the team: problem, what you built, one number, what is next.
- Write a short results doc and link it in your final update.
- Hand off: open issues, how to run it, known risks.
- Copy your log into your resume while the numbers are fresh. Use writing bullets.
- Ask 2 people for LinkedIn recommendations or to be references.
If you get the offer¶
- Get the deadline and the full offer in writing.
- Compare against other offers using comp basics and negotiation.
If you do not get the offer¶
- Ask your manager for specific feedback and whether they would refer you to other teams.
- Apply to new grad roles from August to October. Your internship is now your strongest resume line. See jobs.
Weekly update (send every Friday, 5 lines max)
Subject: [Your name] intern update, week [N]
Done: [what shipped or finished, with a link]
Learned: [one thing, one line]
Next week: [1 to 3 items]
Blocked on: [person or decision you need, or "nothing"]
Ask: [one specific question or review request]
Midpoint feedback ask
Hi [Manager],
We're at the halfway point. Could we use 15 minutes of our next 1:1 for feedback?
1. What is going well that I should keep doing?
2. What one change would most improve my impact in the next 6 weeks?
3. What would make my project a clear success by my final week?
4. What does the return-offer decision depend on, and when is it made?
Thanks,
[Name]
Plan B if you have no offer by March¶
- Apply to Fall 2027 roles on the Simplify Off-Season list.
- Apply to GSoC (contributor window mid to late March), the MLH Fellowship, and the LFX Mentorship summer term (listed mid-April). Steps on programs.
- Email 5 professors at your school about summer research. Template on programs.
- Apply to startups. Their season runs December to March.
- Ship one project over the summer and enter 2 hackathons from the MLH 2027 season. That becomes your proof for the next cycle.
