Interview process

New grad

  1. Apply. Early-talent roles are typically posted by mid-September for the following year and reviewed on a rolling basis; most hiring concludes before the end of the year (official early-talent page). Robinhood says new grad roles are most easily reached through its internship. As of 2026-10-04 the Greenhouse board lists an APM new grad role but no SWE new grad posting.
  2. Initial screen. Official: coding assessment or recruiter chat, depending on role. Candidates report a CodeSignal online assessment for intern and new grad tracks (Taro intern reports from Oct 2024 and Nov 2025). Recruiter call covers background, most impactful project, why Robinhood, what you want next, visa status and comp expectations (Feb 2026 report).
  3. Assessment / technical screen. Official: hiring manager interview, may include a role-specific assessment. Reported technical screens are 45 to 60 min live coding, one practical multi-part problem (referral counts on a graph, fractional-share inventory, service load factors on a DAG, top 10 frequent words). Some screens are system design (job scheduler, Oct 2025).
  4. Onsite (remote). Official: remote interviews with team members. Reported loops have 3 to 4 rounds, sometimes split across several days: a practical coding round, a Project Deep Dive (PDD) on one of your projects, a system design round, and a hiring manager or behavioral round. A Jul 2026 backend report says Robinhood sends an official prep doc before the virtual onsite. Aced's guide says some onsites are in person at an office for 1 to 2 days, so confirm the format with your recruiter.
  5. Team match and offer. Team matching can follow the onsite; one Mar 2026 candidate reported about two months of team-match limbo before a rejection. Candidates needing sponsorship report receiving an immigration assessment form before the offer stage (Mar 2026).

Intern

  1. Apply. Summer 2027 SWE intern postings require graduation in Winter 2027 or Spring 2028; Robinhood prefers penultimate-year Bachelor's or Master's students. 12 or 16 week programs.
  2. Online assessment. CodeSignal OA is the most reported first gate for interns. No public cutoff; CodeSignal certified assessments now report a 200 to 600 Assessment Score.
  3. Recruiter screen. Short call on background, experience, fit and why Robinhood (Nov 2025 Taro intern report).
  4. Final round (super day or virtual onsite). July 2025 intern report: two back-to-back rounds on one day, one LeetCode-style technical round (medium to hard) and one behavioral round on past projects and experiences. Nov 2025 intern report: a virtual onsite with multiple technical and behavioral rounds.

With 1 to 3 years of experience

For 1 to 3 years (L1 to L2) the loop adds weight on system design and the Project Deep Dive. Reported L2/SDE II loops (2026): technical screen (referral count with DFS and memoization, follow-up on handling a stream of new users incrementally), onsite coding (fractional stock inventory in 45 min with a logging follow-up), PDD (show scope, ownership, impact, technical complexity), and system design (distributed job scheduler with at-most-once runs, deduplication, sharding and key design, recovery from crashes). Interviewers keep asking follow-ups to collect signal. interviewing.io (mid to senior) describes a centralized process where interviewers are usually not from your future team, a Karat-run phone screen mixing algorithms and system design, an onsite of coding (1 hr, usually CoderPad), system design (2 hrs, often two rounds), past project review (1 hr) and a hiring manager call, and a hiring committee decision except for low-volume roles. A Jul 2026 backend report: recruiter call, hiring manager chat (background only), a 60 min system design phone screen with results the next day, then a virtual onsite of PDD (60 min; prepare 1 to 2 slides on a project from the last two years and say what you would redo), system design (60 min on a CoderPad whiteboard) and coding (45 min, any language, edge cases weighted).

Online assessment

  • Platform: CodeSignal
  • Format: Not published by Robinhood. Older reports describe the classic CodeSignal General Coding Assessment shape (4 questions, about 70 min, easy to hard). Recent live rounds use CodeSignal-style prompts with execution and memory limits (for example 3 to 4 second time limits).
  • Notes: CodeSignal reports Robinhood has used its assessment and interview products since 2019 (cited in the PracHub guide). There is no public score cutoff; old thresholds like 820 or 850 used a scale CodeSignal has since replaced with 200 to 600. Practice reading long, rule-heavy prompts and returning exact string formats.

Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.

Coding rounds

  • Rounds: 1 technical screen plus 1 to 2 onsite coding rounds (intern: 1 technical round in the super day)
  • Style: Practical, domain-flavored, multi-part problems with long specs: fractional shares inventory, referral chain leaderboard, service dependency load factors, calendar layout, string packing into rows, top K words. Difficulty roughly LeetCode medium to hard, but the challenge is careful case handling and exact output format.
  • Environment: Live coding in CodeSignal-style environments with runnable tests and execution limits (LeetCode Discuss prompts from 2025 list 3 to 4 second time limits); interviewing.io says onsite coding is usually in CoderPad and the phone screen for mid to senior roles can be run by Karat; a Jul 2026 report used a CoderPad whiteboard for system design.
  • Graded on: Passing the provided tests, clean and simple implementation (a Sep 2026 interviewer pushed for simpler, clearer code), explaining the approach quickly, handling edge cases such as unreachable nodes, complexity, and follow-ups on scaling or logging.
  • Reported focus topics: Graphs and DAGs (DFS with memoization, topological sort, reachability), Hash maps and careful simulation with exact output formatting, Heaps and top K, Intervals and calendars, Integer money math (amounts in cents, no floats), Multi-source BFS on grids, System design: job schedulers, order entry and execution, idempotency, at-most-once delivery, Project deep dive storytelling

Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

What they ask (data)

Based on 1 distinct problems tagged to Robinhood in the last 6 months (0 in the last 30 days, 1 in the last 3 months, 14 all-time) across two open datasets of LeetCode company tags. Tags are user-reported, so treat frequency as a signal, not a promise.

Difficulty mix (last 6 months): Hard 100%

Most tagged topics (share of problems): Array 100%, String 100%, Simulation 100%

Watch out: Robinhood has thin LeetCode data. Weight the reported questions and the format notes above more than this list.

Most frequent problems

Ranked by frequency, weighted toward the last 30 days. Classics like Two Sum sit near the top of almost every company's list because users tag them everywhere. Solve those fast. The signature list below is more specific to this company.

Beyond LeetCode

Project Deep Dive (PDD): 45 to 60 min on one past project where you must show scope, ownership, decisions, scalability and complexity. Finance-domain practical coding (fractional-share inventory with dollar-based orders and an inventory log follow-up; referral chain leaderboard; order matching). Frontend tracks get JavaScript tasks (chainable rectangle API, weekly calendar); data roles get SQL on gold-membership transactions.

System design

Appears in the onsite for most full-time SWE loops (interviewing.io says mid to senior onsites often have two design rounds) and occasionally as the phone screen (Oct 2025 job scheduler screen). Flavor is backend HLD with financial correctness: distributed job scheduler with SLAs, logs and at-most-once runs (most repeated), order entry for limit orders that tolerates concurrent requests and instance failures without double spending, order execution with cancellation, photo album or photo management service, secure trading app on AWS. Expect deep follow-ups on failure modes, idempotency, deduplication and schema/key design. New grad depth is lighter than L2 but candidates should still prepare the job scheduler.

Start with who needs system design, then the framework.

Behavioral

Framework: Robinhood values: Insane Customer Focus, High Performance, Safety Always, One Robinhood, Participation is Power, First Principles Thinking, Lean and Disciplined (official page)

What they look for:

  • Ownership and measurable impact on a project you can defend in depth (Project Deep Dive)
  • Safety and correctness mindset for money-moving systems
  • Customer focus and interest in democratizing finance
  • Urgency with quality (High Performance)
  • First-principles reasoning and clear tradeoffs
  • Interest in fintech (listed in the Summer 2027 intern posting)

Questions to prepare:

  • Walk me through the project with the most impact and your specific role in it (Feb 2026 recruiter call)
  • Why Robinhood?
  • What are the top three factors you weigh when choosing an offer?
  • What are you looking for in your next role?
  • Explain the complexity and scalability of a system you built after the business-logic questions run out (Apr 2026 PDD)
  • Which decisions did you make on this project and what would you redo?

Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.

Tips

  • Practice the three repeat problems end to end under 45 min: referral chain leaderboard, fractional-share inventory (with the inventory log follow-up), and DAG load factor.
  • Store money and share quantities as integers (the prompts encode 2 decimal places as the last two digits) and never use floats.
  • Ask whether every node is reachable and whether inputs are ordered before coding; a Sep 2026 candidate failed 1 of 4 tests on that assumption.
  • Explain your approach in under 2 minutes, then code; interviewers have pushed for simpler, clearer implementations over clever ones.
  • Prepare the distributed job scheduler deeply: at-most-once runs, dedup, SLA misses, crash recovery, queue failure, and key design. Hello Interview's job scheduler breakdown is a good base, but candidates say you also need failure-scenario depth.
  • Pick one project for the Project Deep Dive and prepare scale numbers, your own decisions, and what you would redo.
  • For the Project Deep Dive, prepare 1 to 2 slides on a project from the last two years, and be ready to say what went poorly and what you would redo (Jul 2026 backend report).
  • Apply in September: early-talent roles post by mid-September and most hiring ends before year end.
  • International students: Robinhood says it sponsors visas for US and UK roles but not Canada; Toronto intern and co-op roles are a different track.

4-week plan for Robinhood

Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.

  • Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
  • Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
  • Week 3: Solve problems 41 to 50 and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
  • Week 4: Write 8 stories for the Robinhood values: Insane Customer Focus, High Performance, Safety Always, One Robinhood, Participation is Power, First Principles Thinking, Lean and Disciplined round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: All URLs fetched or API-confirmed on 2026-10-04 (LeetCode Discuss posts confirmed via LeetCode's GraphQL API because the HTML returns 403 to scripts; Glassdoor and Reddit could not be fetched, so no claims rest on them). Robinhood does not publish an official interview prep page; the early-talent page gives only the 5-step outline. New grad specifics are thin: most detailed 2025 to 2026 reports are L2/SDE II or senior, so the new grad loop is inferred (OA, screen, 3 to 4 round onsite with coding, PDD, design, HM). Whether new grads get a full system design round is unconfirmed. PracHub pages are candidate reports curated and sometimes translated by PracHub; titles there are paraphrased. Values naming changed over time: older material lists 'Safety First' and 'Radical Customer Focus'; the current about-us page lists 'Safety Always' and 'Insane Customer Focus' plus 'Lean and Disciplined'. tryexponent.com/blog/robinhood-interview-process now 301-redirects to aced.io. Fact-check pass 2026-10-04: removed an unsupported 'Feb 2026 CoderPad print bug' claim; the Greenhouse job URL now points at job-boards.greenhouse.io (old boards.greenhouse.io 301-redirects); Levels.fyi intern hourly figures confirmed from levels.fyi/js/internshipData.json. The Jul 2026 backend PDD details (slides, prep doc) come from the original candidate text embedded in the PracHub question page data, not the visible summary. LeetCode 286 Walls and Gates and the PracHub frontend and SQL questions are premium or partly locked. As of 2026-10-04 no SWE new grad role is posted on Robinhood's Greenhouse board; LeetCode problem mappings marked are close equivalents, not verbatim.
