Interview process

New grad

  1. Application. Apply on the GS careers portal (higher.gs.com). New Analyst Program eligibility: graduating between Dec 2026 and Jul 2027; as of Oct 2026 'applications for select businesses are now open'. GS evaluates applications throughout the recruiting season, so you may hear about different roles at different times. Register for events at My GS Events.
  2. HackerRank assessment (engineering). Official: engineering applicants take a HackerRank assessment. Reported 2025 to 2026 'Engineering Combined' OA: 2 coding questions (1 easy, 1 medium to hard) plus about 9 math questions (probability, linear algebra, matrices); the email said 180 minutes (one candidate saw 225 in HackerRank). An Aug 2026 report describes a new 45-minute 'Software Diagnostics' section: fix a bug in a real-world environment (Django, Node.js or Spring Boot) with a built-in AI assistant for UI navigation, syntax and problem clarity.
  3. HireVue video interview. Official: a video interview of about 30 minutes, recorded answers to preset questions. A Feb 2026 summer analyst candidate had only 1 question, followed by a location/division preference survey.
  4. Superday. Official: typically 2 to 5 interviews for campus hires depending on division, meeting a cross-section of people you could work with; interviews are 30 to 60 minutes, one-on-one or in pairs, and the lineup is not shared in advance. Engineering Superdays use CoderPad for live coding.
  5. Decision. Official PDF: GS aims to be in touch within two weeks after your interview; check in with your recruiter if not.

Intern

  1. Application. As of Oct 2026 the GS students page says summer internship applications are open; applications are reviewed throughout the season, so replies come at different times (a 2024 applicant who applied in late September got a still-reviewing email a month later).
  2. HackerRank (coding plus math). 2 coding questions plus math questions in one sitting (see OA). A Jan 2026 candidate completed both coding questions and all math questions for the 2026 Engineering role.
  3. HireVue. About 30 minutes officially; a Feb 2026 candidate had a single question. A preference survey followed.
  4. Superday (two 45-minute interviews). Feb 2026, Dallas summer analyst: two 45-minute interviews assessing 'technical skills, consisting of coding and/or math, and behavioral skills'. Interview 1: one interviewer, about 5 minutes of behavioral/situational questions, then one CoderPad question; interview 2: same format with two interviewers. Questions were a LeetCode medium and a LeetCode easy. Another candidate interviewed in October and heard back a week later.
  5. Quant/strat intern variant. A Nov 2025 Quant Strat intern Superday was also two 45-minute interviews in one day.

With 1 to 3 years of experience

Lateral Analyst and Associate hires (common for 1 to 3 years, especially in India) follow: HackerRank OA (2 coding questions, e.g. an easy priority-queue problem and a Count Number of Teams variant) then a CoderPad elimination round (45 to 60 min, 2 DSA questions, write your own tests) then a Superday of 3 to 4 one-hour rounds, often with 2 interviewers each and often eliminatory: Data Structures; Software Engineering Practices (Java/OOP, collections, multithreading, SQL, design patterns, CI/CD, build process, unit testing, in-depth resume walkthrough); Software Design and Architecture (HLD such as a Twitter feed or a Datadog-style log service, LLD such as a parking lot); Hiring Manager (projects, SDLC, situational questions). Some get an extra DSA round, a director chat, or several hiring-manager calls for team matching. Division hiring freezes can force re-interviews for another division (Aug 2026 report). 2026 Superday reports also describe 3 rounds covering DSA, system design and behavioral (a Jun 2026 post, location not stated, said back to back and was told results in 24 to 48 hours; a Feb 2026 US post had SDLC plus resume, HLD design, and DSA, then an additional DSA round).

Online assessment

  • Platform: HackerRank
  • Format: Campus 'Engineering Combined': 2 coding questions (easy plus medium/hard) and about 9 math questions (probability, linear algebra, matrices), stated 180 minutes. Aug 2026 report adds a 45-minute 'Software Diagnostics' bug-fix section in Django, Node.js or Spring Boot with a built-in AI assistant. Lateral OA: 2 coding questions.
  • Notes: Official PDF points HackerRank candidates to a 'Guide to HackerRank Success'. The math section is unusual among tech OAs: revise probability, expected value, combinatorics and basic linear algebra. The HireVue comes after the OA for campus candidates.

Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.

Coding rounds

  • Rounds: CoderPad screen for laterals; 2 Superday interviews for interns; 1 to 3 coding-heavy Superday rounds for analysts
  • Style: LeetCode easy and medium with some hards; GS reuses a known pool of practical array/string/DP problems (student average scores, trapping rain water style 'snowpack', fraction to recurring decimal, grid DP 'stone collector', find minimum in rotated array). Java and OOP questions often mixed into coding rounds for Java teams.
  • Environment: CoderPad: you share your screen with an engineer, write and execute code while talking, choose your language (C++, C, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Python, Scala among others); templates may include a test harness to extend (e.g. doTestsPass()). Zoom with camera on for virtual rounds. HackerRank for the OA.
  • Graded on: Official CoderPad criteria: problem solving, quality of your code, ability to read and write code, communication. Official PDF also says produce an optimal solution rather than one that simply works, explain your thought process and justify choices, and handle ambiguous specifications.
  • Reported focus topics: Arrays, strings and hash maps (score averages, frequency counting), Dynamic programming on grids and strings, Heaps and scheduling (median stream, single-threaded CPU, car pooling), Graphs and grids: BFS/DFS (islands, rotting oranges, forests from parent pointers), Stacks (adjacent duplicates, monotonic stack), Binary search (rotated arrays), Cache design (LRU, LFU), Java and OOP fundamentals, multithreading, SQL, Probability, statistics and linear algebra (OA math section), SDLC, CI/CD and unit testing, LLD (parking lot) and HLD (news feed, logging) for analyst roles

Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

Beyond LeetCode

Math section on the OA (probability, linear algebra). HireVue recorded video answers. Software Diagnostics bug fix in a real framework with an AI assistant (reported Aug 2026). Software Engineering Practices round (Java internals, OOP, SQL, multithreading, design patterns, CI/CD, testing). LLD and HLD rounds for analysts. Quant and strat roles add stochastic calculus, differential equations, probability and statistics (official PDF).

System design

Not reported for summer analyst Superdays (Feb 2026 interns described coding plus behavioral only, with no conceptual OOP/OS questions). For Analyst roles, especially lateral hires and some US Superdays, a 'Software Design and Architecture' round is common: HLD (Twitter home timeline, Datadog-style logging) plus LLD (parking lot with nearest-spot search from multiple entrances, distributed cache class), with questions on database choice, indexing, load balancing and scaling.

Start with who needs system design, then the framework.

Behavioral

Framework: Goldman Sachs values: Partnership, Client Service, Integrity, Excellence, plus the 14 Business Principles written in 1979. (official page)

What they look for:

  • Official: how you have navigated or would navigate real work situations; interviews focus on real-world problems
  • Official: creativity in problem solving and thinking about interoperability, scalability and performance
  • Official: dealing with ambiguous specifications and finding efficient solutions
  • Official: finance knowledge is a bonus, not a requirement
  • Integrity and client judgment in situational questions
  • Clear explanation of your choices and willingness to take hints

Questions to prepare:

  • Why Goldman Sachs?
  • Why do you want to leave your current company?
  • An important client asks you for information about a competitor. What do you do?
  • A remote colleague sends you completed work that is not relevant to the project. What do you do?
  • Tell me about a time when you... (situational behavioral questions in a 2026 intern Superday)
  • Walk me through your SDLC: build, CI/CD, unit testing.
  • How much do you use AI in your work, and how do you decide whether its output is correct?
  • Walk me through a project on your resume: database choice, load, and how you would scale it.

Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.

Tips

  • Revise probability, expected value, combinatorics and basic linear algebra; the campus OA puts math questions next to 2 coding questions.
  • GS asks candidates not to review CoderPad questions in advance or share them afterward. Prepare by topic (grid DP, heaps, strings, caches) rather than memorizing reported prompts.
  • In CoderPad, run your code, add your own test cases, and state time and space complexity; GS grades problem solving, code quality, reading and writing code, and communication.
  • Pick your strongest language. If you choose Java, expect questions on collections, streams, polymorphism, records and lambdas.
  • Rehearse 30 to 60 second spoken answers on camera for HireVue; 'why GS' and situational questions come up.
  • Learn the four values (partnership, client service, integrity, excellence) and skim the Business Principles; situational questions test client and integrity judgment.
  • With 1+ years of experience, prepare one LLD (parking lot) and one HLD (news feed) plus database indexing basics for the design and SDLC rounds.
  • Watch for the 2026 Software Diagnostics section: practice reading and fixing a bug in an unfamiliar Django, Node.js or Spring Boot app.

4-week plan for Goldman Sachs

Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.

  • Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
  • Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
  • Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
  • Week 4: Write 8 stories for the Goldman Sachs values: Partnership, Client Service, Integrity, Excellence, plus the 14 Business Principles written in 1979. round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Watch out: Re-verified Oct 4, 2026 by an adversarial fact-check pass [VERIFIED]: goldmansachs.com students prepare page (HackerRank for engineering applicants, ~30-min video interview, Superday of two to five interviews for campus hires, 'programs range from one-week spring internships to full-time positions', 'we evaluate applications throughout the recruiting season'), New Analyst Program page (Dec 2026 to Jul 2027 graduates, select businesses open, program start Summer 2027), students page (2027 summer internships accepting applications) and purpose-and-values page (four values; 14 Business Principles written in 1979 by John Whitehead) fetched directly; the interview prep PDF downloaded (it sits behind a JavaScript redirect page, fetchable with same-origin fetch headers) and read: two-week reply goal, 30 to 60 minute interviews one-on-one or in pairs, no lineup in advance, CoderPad criteria, 45 to 60 minute CoderPad, ask not to review or share CoderPad questions, quant math topics. Levels.fyi figures and samples parsed; LeetCode posts via GraphQL; Reddit posts and comments via the Arctic Shift archive; all LeetCode problem slugs confirmed real (High Five is Premium-only); liquidslr GS CSV last updated Aug 16, 2026. Corrections made in this pass: Analyst Levels.fyi sample mix (6 of 13 in Dallas, only 1 in Salt Lake City); India total comp range starts at about INR 29.9L; the India NAP 2027 closure is a single post title, not a per-campus fact; the 3-round 2026 Superday report is not confirmed as US. Added 7 more 2025 to 2026 reported questions from posts already cited. Caveats: most detailed Superday reports on LeetCode come from lateral Analyst/Associate candidates in India, which differ from US campus Superdays (US interns report two 45-minute interviews). The Software Diagnostics section with an AI assistant rests on one Aug 2026 Reddit post quoting the OA invite plus Aug to Sep 2026 comments (SpringBoot REST API with 5 to 8 models, .sh request scripts, 'learn how to use the AI assistant'); confirm with your own invite. Math question counts vary (9 to 10) and one candidate's email said 180 minutes while HackerRank showed 225. Division matters a lot (Engineering vs Global Banking & Markets strats vs Asset & Wealth Management). The Summer Analyst program page URL could not be resolved (program listing is script-rendered); use the programs-and-internships listing or higher.gs.com. The US Analyst Levels.fyi average of $114K is pulled down by non-NYC entries.
