PayPal at a glance
Category Big Tech
Intern level Software Engineer Intern (US/Canada 12 weeks, May to September; India 12 weeks, May to July, for 3rd-year students)
New grad level Software Engineer 1 (India campus title, Jan 2026 offer). US new grads join the 2-year Recent Graduates Program. Levels.fyi lists CL5 as the lowest SWE level.
0 to 3 years 2025 offer letters moved to CL levels: a 3-YOE Bengaluru 'Software Engineer CL5' offer (Jul 2025), while a May 2025 Chennai offer to a 2023 grad still used 'Software Engineering (T23)'. Levels.fyi lists CL5 to CL9 for SWE (CL5 median 3 YOE, CL6 median 8 YOE). PayPal has not published a T-to-CL mapping, so treat CL5 as the 0 to about 4 YOE band and CL6 as senior.
Online assessment HackerRank (India and most experienced roles); Karat live screen for some US roles : Intern: 45 to 90 min, 1 to 2 DSA + CS MCQs. Early-career: 2 to 3 DSA (one easy, one hard), plus Spring Boot/Java MCQs, SQL, or a machine coding class design. SSE Python (Feb 2026): 4 questions covering SQL, DSA, machine coding

Interview process

New grad

  1. Application. US: Recent Graduates Program (2 years, apply within 12 months of graduating, rolling year-round). India: campus placements plus job postings. Applications go through PayPal's Eightfold portal (paypal.eightfold.ai).
  2. Online assessment. HackerRank. India Summer 2025 internship (2026 graduating batch, Dec 2024 report): 45 min, 1 DSA (greedy string with priority queue) + 5 CS MCQs. India Summer 2026 internship OA (Oct 30, 2025): 90 min. Experienced/early-career OAs mix 2 to 3 DSA with Spring Boot MCQs, SQL, or a machine-coding class design (Java library management system in 45 min, Jul 2025).
  3. Karat screen (US). 60 min, recorded, run by a Karat interviewer. Reported format (iOS role Jun 2025; Senior role USA Jul 2025): about 5 min intro, 10 to 20 min reviewing or debugging code snippets for your domain (bugs, performance, OOP, clean code), then 30 to 45 min of 1 to 2 practical DSA problems that are not straight LeetCode. A new grad backend (Python) loop posted Nov 2024 (location not stated) started with Karat, then DSA and a Data Specialization round.
  4. DS/Algo round. 45 to 60 min, LeetCode medium (DP and graphs common), working code, edge cases, complexity. India new grad/intern rounds also test resume and CS fundamentals.
  5. Role specialization round. Domain or stack round: implement an LLD with given function signatures (booking system), language internals (Python multithreading vs multiprocessing, Spring Boot), frontend build tasks (React search bar with debouncing), or a 'Data Specialization' round for data-backend roles.
  6. System design. Scenario-based, conversational. Usually for 2+ YOE, sometimes included for early-career.
  7. Bar Raiser / Leadership + hiring manager. Behavioral round on leadership principles (ownership, cross-team collaboration, failure, conflict), then HM or team match. A US CL5 candidate (Aug 2025) listed 4 rounds: DSA, System Design, Leadership, Role Specialization. A backend 'virtual onsite' reported as 4 hours (Jan 2026, location not stated): algorithms coding, role specialization coding, system design, leadership. All virtual interviews run on Microsoft Teams (official page).

Intern

  1. Application. US/Canada: recruiting runs August through March, reviewed on a rolling basis; must return to school for at least one term after. India: application window July to December via campus placements; official process is 'online test and technical interview'.
  2. Online assessment. HackerRank, 45 to 90 min, 1 to 2 DSA plus CS MCQs. India off-campus Summer 2026 OA (req R0130921, Bangalore) ran on Oct 30, 2025: one candidate reported 90 min, another solved both questions in 25 min.
  3. Technical interview(s). India: Tech 1 and Tech 2 (DSA such as 2D-grid greedy and island/graph problems, resume, CS fundamentals), then an HM round. Off-campus Tech 1 rounds ran around Nov 28, 2025; candidates in Dec 2025 asked whether all rounds are eliminatory, unclear.
  4. HM / HR round. 45 min with an engineering manager: experience, interests, projects (Dec 2024 report, India Summer 2025 internship).
  5. Conversion. Interns can convert: a Jan 2026 India Software Engineer 1 offer came after a 3-month PayPal summer internship.

With 1 to 3 years of experience

For 1 to 3 yrs (CL5/SWE 2) expect: HackerRank OA, DS/Algo round, System Design (scenario-based: ticket booking without double booking, notification service with idempotency, configuration/feature-flag service, flight booking), Role Specialization (LLD or stack depth: Spring Boot, concurrency, React), Bar Raiser, then HM/team matching. Some hires are 'pool hires' not tied to a team. Interviews can be cancelled or run poorly (interviewer unprepared, only theory questions) per 2025 to 2026 posts.

Online assessment

  • Platform: HackerRank (India and most experienced roles); Karat live screen for some US roles
  • Format: Intern: 45 to 90 min, 1 to 2 DSA + CS MCQs. Early-career: 2 to 3 DSA (one easy, one hard), plus Spring Boot/Java MCQs, SQL, or a machine coding class design. SSE Python (Feb 2026): 4 questions covering SQL, DSA, machine coding
  • Notes: Mixed sections mean time management decides the result; a candidate who skipped the 45-min library management design asked if they could still pass.

Prepare with How to pass an OA and compare formats in OA formats by company.

Coding rounds

  • Rounds: 1 to 2 DS/Algo rounds plus a Role Specialization coding round
  • Style: LeetCode medium, sometimes hard; DP, graphs, arrays, strings, heaps; practical Karat-style problems for US; LLD with predefined signatures in role specialization
  • Environment: Microsoft Teams with HackerRank or CoderPad-style shared editor; Karat's own platform for Karat screens
  • Graded on: Working code with edge cases, complexity, explaining choices, language and framework depth in the specialization round
  • Reported focus topics: Dynamic programming, Graphs and grids (islands, BFS), Arrays and strings, sliding window, two pointers, Heaps and top-K, Monotonic stack, Concurrency and multithreading, LLD: booking, library, notification systems, Payments-flavored HLD: idempotency, double booking, feature flags, Java/Spring Boot or Python depth, SQL

Run every practice problem through the 45-minute framework and the code quality rubric.

What they ask (data)

Based on 5 distinct problems tagged to PayPal in the last 6 months (1 in the last 30 days, 1 in the last 3 months, 104 all-time) across two open datasets of LeetCode company tags. Tags are user-reported, so treat frequency as a signal, not a promise.

Difficulty mix (last 6 months): Medium 80%, Easy 20%

Most tagged topics (share of problems): Array 60%, Sorting 40%, String 20%, Binary Search 20%, Dynamic Programming 20%, Longest Increasing Subsequence 20%, Tree 20%, Breadth-First Search 20%, Hash Table 20%, Divide and Conquer 20%

Watch out: PayPal has thin LeetCode data. Weight the reported questions and the format notes above more than this list.

Most frequent problems

Ranked by frequency, weighted toward the last 30 days. Classics like Two Sum sit near the top of almost every company's list because users tag them everywhere. Solve those fast. The signature list below is more specific to this company.

Beyond LeetCode

Role Specialization round (stack depth plus LLD with given signatures); Karat screen with a code review/debugging section before DSA; machine coding inside the HackerRank OA; frontend tasks (debounced search bar, React internals); 'Data Specialization' round for data-backend roles.

System design

Interns and new grads: usually none, resume-based design questions possible. 2+ YOE: a dedicated, conversational HLD round with payments-flavored scenarios (idempotency, double booking, real-time updates, configuration rollout and rollback). LLD/machine coding appears in OAs and role specialization (library management, booking system, concurrency control, notification system).

Start with who needs system design, then the framework.

Behavioral

Framework: Values (Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, Wellness) plus Leadership Principles (Put People First, Work Customer Back, Win Together); assessed in a 'Bar Raiser' or leadership round (official page)

What they look for:

  • Specific, detailed examples per competency (official tip)
  • Examples from more than one job or project (official: 'Vary your examples')
  • Ownership and handling failure
  • Cross-team collaboration and resolving architectural disagreements
  • Customer-first reasoning (Work Customer Back)

Questions to prepare:

  • Tell me about a time you owned a project end to end.
  • Describe a failure and what you changed afterward.
  • Tell me about a disagreement with another team on an architectural decision.
  • How have you collaborated across teams to ship something?
  • Why are you looking to switch, and why PayPal?

Build your answers with the story bank. Company detail: behavioral guide.

Tips

  • Practice mixed OAs: solve 2 DSA problems and one small class design in 60 to 90 min, since PayPal's HackerRank tests mix sections.
  • For US roles, rehearse a Karat-style hour: read and debug code snippets out loud for 15 minutes, then solve 1 to 2 practical problems.
  • Pick one stack and go deep for the Role Specialization round: Spring Boot internals, Python concurrency, or React performance.
  • Prepare payment-domain design answers: idempotency keys, exactly-once processing, double booking prevention, retries.
  • Map 6 to 8 STAR stories to Put People First, Work Customer Back, and Win Together; PayPal's own interview page tells you to research its Leadership Principles and vary your examples.
  • Keep other processes running after the HM round; several Q4 2025 candidates waited weeks for offer letters or were told the HM wanted more candidates.
  • India campus candidates: revise OS, DBMS, OOP, and networks for the OA MCQs and the first technical round.
  • First-generation US or India students can apply to Career Academy (tech applications Nov 4 to 28), which can lead to PayPal interviews.

4-week plan for PayPal

Do this after you finish a core list like Grind 75 or NeetCode 150.

  • Week 1: Solve problems 1 to 20 from the most frequent list. Time-box each at 30 minutes.
  • Week 2: Solve problems 21 to 40. Re-solve any you failed in week 1 without looking.
  • Week 3: Solve the signature problems and every reported question above. Do 2 timed mock interviews.
  • Week 4: Write 8 stories for the Values (Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, Wellness) plus Leadership Principles (Put People First, Work Customer Back, Win Together); assessed in a 'Bar Raiser' or leadership round round. Do 2 full mock loops. Review the online assessment and system design notes above.

Sources

Watch out: Nearly all 2025 to 2026 detail comes from India (Bangalore, Chennai) experienced hires; US new grad and US intern loops are thinly documented (one Nov 2024 new grad post, location not stated: Karat, then DSA and Data Specialization; one US CL5 loop list, Aug 2025). Karat use is confirmed for some US roles in 2025, not all. The T-level to CL-level mapping is not published; only offer titles (T23 in May 2025, CL5 in Jul 2025) and Levels.fyi labels are available. The official interviewing page is generic (Teams logistics, competency tips) and never names the Bar Raiser or Role Specialization rounds; those names come from candidates. Recently changed: CL levels in 2025 offers; applications go through an Eightfold portal (paypal.eightfold.ai, linked from the official North America university page); some Q4 2025 candidates reported holds and delayed offer letters. careers.pypl.com and about.pypl.com return HTTP 403 to scripted fetches but load in a browser fetcher; their content was confirmed that way. Glassdoor and Reddit could not be fetched. Category could also be read as fintech.
